I have been a member of the youth advisory group of northern district Toronto Public library since grade 9. The purpose of the YAG is to promote teens to go and participate at their libraries. A meeting is held once a month and certain decisions are made during the time. This includes questions about what teens like and don't like and other decisions that can have an impact on the teens. The teens also host many events to make the library a more teen friendly environment.
This experience has always been a big part of my life and has taught me many life lessons. I have learned how to cooperate with others (in particular the elders) and deal with a lot of ethics issues. It has shaped me as the person I am today because many opportunities where given for me to grow and learn.
During 11th and 12th grade, activities where made for the high-school kids of the school to promote respect. During the first phase, I did an activity on Islamophobia. On the second and third phase, I did an activity on general respect. All these activities focused on having open discussions with the students to understand their opinions, thus then being able to further educate them.
This experience taught me how to work fast and efficiently with others. It has also taught me on putting myself in other people's shoes to understand their perspectives. Finally, many questions where raised about the global impacts of our subjects and how that often relates to culture (ethics).
The speakers bureau at plan Canada focuses on their organisation Because I am a girl. The bureau is open to kids from age 12 and up. This means that the target audience are teens and young adults. The meetings are held once a month, where each month a certain topic is explored in more depth. This experience encourages the members to speak out about what they are passionate about in a comfortable and safe environment.
This experience had encouraged me to practice more my public speaking skills and to be more comfortable and open around others. To add on, every month, challenges are given to then take what you learned from the meetings into your community. This experience has taught me how to speak about difficult topics and issue to a variety of audiences appropriately.
