During my grade 12, I decided to get a membership at the YMCA of Toronto. I go around 3-4 times a week. I mostly focus on strength training and sometimes do cardio. My goal was to simply keep myself moving and take care of my body. All the working can easily take a tole on me so working out really helped to feel energized.
This experience has taught me the importance of taking care of myself before stressing about everything else. It has also given me consistency and a good habit to keep up. Many moments where challenging because results are slow and sometimes reciprocal. This experience has taught me the power of the now with long term rewards.
I started step cardio in grade 11 to challenge myself. The class was held every Sunday at 9 am. It was a two hours class composed of one hour cardio and one hour strength training. Indeed the class was very hard and really pushed me beyond my limits. The trainer was very supportive and I always felt amazing after the class.
This experience has taught me on how to keep trying and push myself even when my body is not agreeing and worn out. It has also taught me on coordinating myself with my environment.
I have been doing Pilates for since grade 10. Pilates is essentially a form of moving yoga. It teaches you on finding your internal energy and how to make it flow. Pilates targets your core and certain muscles that are not often used when strength training (example pelvic muscles). I really enjoyed the class because I really liked the energy of the class and how free and liberating I felt after it.
The class gave me a better understanding of my body and how it works. It also taught me how my everyday habits do have a lot of impacts on my body and health. Because the class taught me how to control my body's energy, I was able to use that in my life, even such as breathing (my back feels a lot better now).
Headspace is a meditation app that I started to use in the beginning of grade 12. I wanted to try out meditation because I was going trough a period of stress and have heard a lot of positive feedback about this method. The app is organized in a way anyone can use it based on what the are experiencing in their everyday life. I personally focused on improving my mental health and managing my stress levels. I found the app to be very effective and helpful. I strongly recommend it to others too.
Meditation has helped me learn how to calm down during stressful moments. It has also taught me the importance of taking care of my mind and mental health just as much as my physical health. Meditation has also had many positive impacts on my basic happiness and overall well being.
