The Original Steering Group produced a set of aims. The focus was to allow all members transparency as to what we hope to achieve now and into the future. The Committee was elected in March 2024 and will be reviewing these
At the heart of our aims lie core values: Equality, Inclusivity, Safe Spaces and Opportunities to access social events.
We understand that for many reasons, LGBT+ people may feel isolated in today’s world. If you’ve recently come out, moved home, changed job role, decided you want to change your life, want to expand your social life, start new hobbies, left a long term relationship, been widowed or for some other reason are searching for new connections we aim to do our best to help you get started meeting new people and meeting new friendships. We aim to create a friendly environment at all our Rainbow Connections events.
We welcome all people who self-define within any part of the LGBT+ diaspora. We aim to share contact details and events from as broad a range of community groups as are willing to join us, either by simply posting their contact details on our website or by getting them to nominate an Event Organiser who can then post their events onto the Birmingham LGBT+ Social Meetup Page.
We aim to ensure activities and events cover a wide range of topics and interests, so our Rainbow Connections Events, are not solely pub based and we welcome community groups offering chances for members to pursue a variety of interests.
To ensure events are places for everyone to enjoy and take part without fear of discrimination. Some events/groups are focussed on sub sections within the community and meets the need for those within that group to meet together. Events run solely for women or trans men, for example offer a valuable space for those members who wish to socialise in that environment.
We aim to promote equal opportunities for all individuals. Any events open to women, for example, should welcome all women.
To ensure that all members can report problems and know they will be dealt with confidentially. Should an issue occur during an event advertised with us, but run by another community group, we encourage members to raise the issue with that community group first. Any unresolved issues can be shared with us and we will liaise with the community group concerned. We aim to educate those whose unknowing thoughtless words or actions cause offence, We acknowledge that we are a voluntary organisation and are not able to offer specialist mental health services. Wherever we are able we will always try to signpost members to appropriate services.
Issues or suggestions occurring within Rainbow Connections Events should be referred to Vic Hooper (he/him), Matt Mason (he/him) or Bryony O’Hara (she/her).
All leaders understand the aims and objectives of the group and follow set procedures
