Pitch

Souls of Myrrage is a 3D Noir Adventure Platformer game following Angela Brooks, a woman with newfound supernatural powers led to explore abandoned carnival grounds where a mystery lies unsolved. Will she uncover the mystery and solve the crime, or perish in the supernatural realm she's discovered?

Meet the Team

Souls of Myrrage was developed by a group of 12 people and was given a second chance at life after the initial pitch failed the year before. Putting together a new group of creatives, we were able to breathe life into the concept and recreate it in the form of a 3D platformer, with a noir twist. I worked as a concept and asset artist and was responsible for designing the monsters, characters, and many UI elements present in the experience.

What Did I Do?

My main roles in this project included creating a considerable amount of concept, and UI art in a noir/horror style. I was responsible for:

1) Conceptualizing enemies that the player would encounter, and iterating on designs based on feedback given by the team.

2) Maintaining consistent communication with the Lead Artist and Producer to ensure that all assets were completed in time and that they matched the noir aesthetic of the game.

3) Developing promotional artwork that could be used on platforms advertising the final product, and collaborating closely with the Producer to ensure that it captured the essence of the game.

4) Participating in weekly team meetings, and helping the Lead Artist finish their workload when some individuals were forced to leave the project.

5) Updating Trello cards and the team Discord server to allow the team to keep track of progress.

Here is some of the work that I contributed to the project, including concept art, and finished 2D assets.

The Notes tab is meant to be the pause screen, or lore-wise, a chance for the player to pause and "take notes" on what they've seen.

The following are a few iterations of dialogue boxes meant to fit with the notebook aesthetic of the rest of the items.

Concept Art

The concepts below explore the different kinds of supernatural enemies that Angela Brooks, the main protagonist, may encounter in her time exploring the carnival grounds. We discussed mirror demons, ground monsters, and eventually decided on hell hounds patrolling the surrounding area. I discussed the different kinds of monsters in great depth with both the Lead Artist, and the Producer, who gave me great tips on how to better the concepts, and which concepts would be best to further detail.  It was exhilarating thinking up different monster designs that could be the final puzzle piece to creating a mysterious, dangerous adventure.

UI Art

Just below is a series of items that can be found and used as clues to deduce the noir mystery afoot. I had a great time making these items as dirty, bloody, and abandoned as possible, adding ink lines and scribbles as if to get a pen to work to add personality to these items. I also had fun changing the font, and practicing different writing styles to embody several reports from completely different people all commenting on the same bizarre set of circumstances.

What Did I Learn?

This project demonstrated my ability to work closely with Producers, and Lead Artists, as well as to create a series of concepts and final assets in the same visual style. I learned how to update my tasks using production software, as well as how to interact with and work collaboratively with a team. I learned how to work iteratively, and how to balance feedback given by a multitude of people to enhance my contributions to the project. The biggest challenge I faced was taking on more responsibility to help finish the project after several individuals were unable to continue working on it. We were forced to downsize the final product, and the Lead Artist and I worked hard to wrap up all loose ends in the art department together.
