The Circle explores the concept of “nature as a stranger” posed by ikkibawiKrrr’s open call. In this video art piece, the artist personifies the nature center she’s exploring as a strange creature keeping her trapped inside. Plants constantly move as they grow, ensuring that the artist cannot find a path outside of the nature center. This endless landscape was inspired by internet horror stories about terrifying monsters and events. The Circle’s deadpan humor contrasts to the content of these horror stories. The artist creates a video diary of herself calmly documenting the nature center, despite being unable to leave. A viewer is intended to eventually find the diary based on the direct address. The absurdity of the situation is emphasized by the fact that the artist must have escaped the landscape to edit the video.
