Tracking Devices are mandatory in RAAM/RAW - it is expected that you keep them with your rider at all times. If your device is not tracking please call HQ so we can help you troubleshoot. If your device is not working after that we will make arrangements to switch it out. We can normally get it working. It is expected that you will make every effort to fix your device and you will be responsive to fixing it should it stop tracking. Here are a few common mistakes people make:
These devices use satellites to function. The device antenna is under the SPOT logo on the tracker. If you have the device in the rider's jersey pocket, that logo must be pointing outward and it should be alone in the pocket. No water bottles or food on top of it.
Do not put the device in a jersey pocket with a water bottle, food, or anything else. Those items will block the antenna.
2, 4 and 8 rider teams - the device should be placed on the follow vehicle dashboard toward the windshield so that the antenna has direct sight to the sky.
2, 4, and 8 rider Teams - Don't forget to switch the tracker to the new car when you change vehicles - too often the tracker goes off in the wrong direction because crews forget to switch it between cars. You MUST keep that tracker with the rider. NO EXCEPTIONS. Tracking devices that head to Walmart/gas stations/hotels/any other place, not with the rider, will be notified and made to return to the rider within 30 minutes, or a penalty will be issued.
For the purposes of this race - your tracker is your racer. If your tracker is off route, then your rider is officially off route!
Just because you don't see a light doesn't mean it isn't working. The light turns off to save the battery. Please check the Trackleader website before you call in.
Reset your tracking device about every 3 days. Press and hold the power button for three seconds and the power light will flash then go off. Count to 10. Push the power button again quickly and release it immediately. Lights will cycle rapidly, and you should get 2 green lights in a bit - the power light and the GPS light. The GPS light might take several minutes to acquire a satellite, so be patient. (For Gen 3 Devices - see below)
Batteries
You should not need to change out your batteries more than once. They should be good for at least 7 days. When it is time, be sure to check out these instructions:

If for some reason your device is just not working, you will need to call HQ and then we will make arrangements for you to be issued another device. It is your responsibility to make sure you are tracking by checking once in a while at the Trackleaders Website. You will be required to get a new tracker from an official rapidly if yours stops working. We will put two devices on any rider/team who can't seem to keep one working. Having a working device is key to the safe and fair conduct of this race.
Leaving the Race
Upon leaving the race permanently for any reason other than an official finish, please return your tracking device to the closest RAAM official. Call us an we will be happy to orchestrate the return of your device as quickly as possible to an official. If that doesn't work we can give you another alternative.
