At Queer Active, our aim is simple: to help people get out, get active and get connected. We create welcoming, inclusive opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors, try new activities, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, make friends and feel part of a community.
Our events are at the heart of what we do, and we need brilliant volunteers to help make them happen.
Becoming an Event Lead is your opportunity to play a bigger part in the Queer Active community. You could bring an idea for a new hike to life, introduce members to an activity you love, organise a social event, or simply help create more opportunities for people to come together.
Join the community β Get involved β Choose your training route β Learn the QA way β Shadow or co-lead an event β Get signed off β Become a Queer Active Event Lead π
You don't need to arrive with loads of experience. What matters most is that you're enthusiastic about bringing people together and share our commitment to creating a friendly, respectful and inclusive community.
We offer two routes to becoming an Event Lead. Our 6-Week Event Lead Programme is ideal if you're new to leading and want to build your skills and confidence step by step. If you already have experience organising activities, volunteering or leading groups, our Fast Track Programme gives you a shorter route focused on learning the Queer Active way of doing things.
You'll learn about planning and getting events approved, writing event information, welcoming and communicating with groups, accessibility and inclusion, safeguarding, risk assessments, first aid and emergencies, photography and consent, and what to do when things don't quite go to plan. You'll then have the opportunity to put it into practice by shadowing or co-leading an event before being signed off.
Volunteering as an Event Lead isn't just about what you can give to Queer Active, we want it to be something that gives something back to you too.
It's an opportunity to build confidence, meet new people and develop practical skills in leadership, communication, event planning, teamwork, problem-solving and managing groups. You'll gain real experience that can be useful in your personal life, employment or future volunteering opportunities.
You'll also have the chance to develop new interests and share the things you're passionate about. Got a walking route you've always wanted to explore? Love cycling, badminton, photography or something completely different? Your idea could become the next Queer Active event.
Where possible, we'll also support our volunteers with training and development opportunities, helping you continue building your skills as Queer Active grows.
And perhaps the biggest benefit is knowing you've helped create an experience that matters. Someone attending your event might be coming along on their own for the first time, trying to make friends, rebuilding their confidence or simply looking for somewhere they feel comfortable being themselves. You could be the person who helps them feel welcome.
Our ambition is to build a varied programme of outdoor activities, sport, fitness and social opportunities across Yorkshire while keeping activities as accessible and affordable as possible.
To do that, Queer Active can't rely on just one or two people organising everything. We want to build a diverse team of Event Leads with different interests, experiences, personalities and ideas.
More Event Leads means more events, more locations, more variety and ultimately more opportunities for people to connect.
We don't expect Event Leads to do everything themselves. You'll be part of a wider volunteer team, with support available when you need it. Becoming signed off doesn't mean you're suddenly on your own - it's the beginning of your Event Lead journey.
You don't have to be the loudest person in the room. You don't need to know everything. And you definitely don't need to have everything figured out before you start.
If you care about community, enjoy bringing people together and would like to challenge yourself while making a difference, we'd love to help you become a Queer Active Event Lead.
Bring your ideas. Build your confidence. Help our community get out, get active & get connected. π

Lets hear from one of our leads as to why he leads activities for Queer Active.
"For me, volunteering is about giving something back. Queer Active is more than just walks and activities. it's about creating opportunities for people to belong, build friendships, and feel connected. Being part of that journey and seeing our community grow is why I continue to volunteer as a Lead."Β
