Queer Active was founded by Ben, whose passion for the outdoors began long before the organisation existed. From hiking across the Yorkshire countryside to exploring new places and enjoying an active lifestyle, being outdoors has always been an important part of his life.
Alongside this love of adventure, Ben was a player with the Hull Roundheads rugby club and later helped support the formation of the Scarborough Puffins. Through these experiences, he discovered something far more valuable than sport itself – a sense of community, belonging, and support. It was a feeling unlike anything he had experienced before, and it showed the power that inclusive LGBTQ+ spaces can have in bringing people together.
After stepping away from rugby, Ben saw an opportunity to create something different. While sports clubs provide incredible opportunities for connection, not everyone wants to play rugby or take part in competitive sport. There was a need for a welcoming space where LGBTQ+ people could connect through a wider range of activities, from walks and hikes to nature events, social gatherings, and wellbeing activities.
The vision for Queer Active was simple: create a volunteer-led community that makes physical activity, adventure, and social connection accessible to everyone. The aim was to remove barriers wherever possible, ensuring that people from all backgrounds, abilities, and financial circumstances could take part.
From day one, Queer Active has been committed to supporting people who may feel marginalised, isolated, or excluded from traditional activities. By seeking funding, donations, and community support, we aim to keep events affordable and, where possible, provide opportunities for people to participate free of charge when cost might otherwise be a barrier.
Today, Queer Active continues to grow as a welcoming, inclusive community where people can get active, make meaningful connections, improve their wellbeing, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
Because everyone deserves the opportunity to explore, connect, and thrive.
Get Active. Build Community. Belong Together.
