PYBA 6 Division: Summary of the Game Rules
The PYBA will again recognize the National Federation of State High School Associations Rule Book. With the exception of the following PYBA Game Rules as approved by the PYBA Board of Directors.
- A team must have a minimum of 4 players to start a game otherwise the game is forfeited. If a game is started where a team only has 4 the game will be played as 4 on 4 until such time 5 on 5 can be played.
- Win-Loss records are NOT being kept
- Each game will have 2 referees - if necessary, a game will continue with only 1 referee
- Home team will be responsible for the clock and possession arrow
- Visiting team will be responsible for the scorebook
- Scorekeeper should be 18 years or older
- Clock:
- 7-minute quarters
- Clock is continuously running (stops only on time outs and shooting fouls)
- There is a 5-minute running clock for halftime
- Playing time (in quarters):
- Coaches are required to play late arriving players a minimum of 1 quarter"
- Each player must play a minimum of 2 full quarters
- No single player will play in more than 3 full quarters in a game, unless limited to only 5 or 6 players

- Players must check-in at the beginning of each quarter with the scorekeeper
- If a player is late arriving, then the player will allowed to play if the player’s name is on the game roster and the team still meets the 2-quarter rule
- 5-second key rule is in effect - “In the Paint”
- 8 ½ -ft. basket
- Basketballs:
- 27.5 size basketball will be used
- NO personal basketballs are to be brought to games
- The league will supply each team with a minimum of two official league balls for warm-ups and to use during the game
- Three point shots are allowed
- Free throws:
- Free throw line is 10 feet
- During a free throw, a player may cross over the free throw line after the shot (if necessary)
- Players can move to the basket at release of ball
- Penalty free throws happen when a team exceeds 6 team fouls
- On the 7th team foul, the other team shoots 1-and-1 free throws
- On the 10th team foul, the other team shoots 2 free throws
- Backcourt:
- No backcourt defense is allowed
- Both feet and the ball must cross the mid-Court line before defense can pick-up (defense must allow a 3-foot “gap” for player to cross the mid-court line)
- 10-second backcourt rule is in effect
- No Isolation Offense plays allowed – 1 player dribbles and the other 4 players are in the 4 corners of the court and the dribbler just drives while teammates just stand and watch
- First violation is a warning
- The next violations will be a technical foul and loss of possession
- Substitutions:
- No substitutions in the first 3 quarters (unless if there is a medical emergency or injury)
- Substituting a player or players is allowed once in the 4th quarter by using a Substitution Time Out
- Substitution are only allowed at team time-out, dead ball (clock stops) or official’s time-out due to injury
- Team is allowed 10 seconds to substitute
- Time Outs:
- Coaches can call time outs
- Players can call time outs
- 2 Full time outs allowed per half (a Full time is 1 minute in length)
- One 20-second substitution time out is allowed in the 4th quarter
- Injury time outs are the official’s time out
- Your team must have possession of the ball to call a time out
- Either team can call a time out on a dead ball (when the clock is stopped)
- Man-on-man defense only (No zone defense)
- Uniform:
- The official uniform of the PYBA is necessary for player to be on the court
- The coach(es) will wear the official uniform while coaching from the sidelines
- No alterations to the official uniform without written permission
- Shirt tails must be tucked in at all times
- No jewelry unless approved by the referees
- Team Captains:
- Coaches will designate 2 team captains each game
- Only the team captains will communicate with the officials during the game
- Only the team captains can call time outs
- Violation will result in a two (2) shot technical
- Coach(es):
- Each team will have 1 head coach
- Each team may have 1 assistant coach
- Both the head coach and the assistant coach need to be registered in the PYBA database to be allowed to coach the players during the games from the sidelines
- The coach(es) will wear their PYBA coaching t-shirt during the game - it will be passed out when the team receives their team jersey
- Coaches must stay within the “Coaches Box” during play of game.
- Only 2 (two) coaches are allowed on the coaching sideline: unless an alternate(s) have been approved by the – Head Referee on that court, League VP or President, prior to the tip-off of that game
- The players may NOT coach themselves - If there are problems getting the coaches of record at the game(s), then please make prior arrangements with alternate coach(es)
- All technical fouls will be assessed a two (2) shot penalty and loss of possession of the ball
- Ejections:
- If a coach, player or guest is not following the Code of Conduct, then the referee may eject that person if it interferes with his administration of the game.
- If a coach , player or guest is ejected, then that person will be escorted out from the gym. Failure to do so may result in game forfeiture by the official.
- If a coach is ejected during the regular season he/she will be suspended for a minimum of 2 games but can be longer after a PYBA board review is done.
