The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, or CASEL, is an organization that is committed to social emotional learning. They developed the CASEL Wheel, an SEL Framework that "helps cultivate skills and environments that advance students’ learning and development," to assist schools, districts, states, and other organizations in applying evidence-based SEL strategies in their communities.
There are 5 primary elements to the CASEL Wheel: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. To learn more about CASEL and/or the CASEL Wheel, check out their website!
The Student Voice and Engagement Program integrates CASEL learning objectives into its program model to foster holistic development and well-being among participating students. In doing so, the program aims to address the multifaceted needs of students and works to promote their academic success, social competence, and emotional resilience.
Self-Awareness: Through theatre arts activities, students are encouraged to explore and reflect on their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences. By engaging in creative expression and self-reflection, they develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their identities, which is crucial for building self-awareness.
Self-Management: The program provides students with opportunities to practice self-regulation and impulse control through various theatre and mindfulness exercises. By learning to manage their emotions and behavior in a creative and supportive environment, students develop essential self-management skills that are vital for academic and personal success.
Social Awareness: Through collaborative activities and group discussions, students learn to empathize with others and appreciate diverse perspectives. By exploring different characters and narratives in the theatre, they develop a deeper understanding of social dynamics and learn to navigate complex interpersonal relationships with empathy and respect.
Relationship Skills: The program emphasizes collaboration, communication, and teamwork, fostering the development of positive relationship skills among students. Through group projects, improvisation exercises, and role-playing activities, students learn to work effectively with their peers, resolve conflicts constructively, and build meaningful connections.
Responsible Decision-Making: By engaging in conflict resolution scenarios within the context of theatrical storytelling, students develop critical thinking skills and learn to make responsible decisions. Through guided discussions and reflective exercises, they explore the consequences of their actions and learn to make choices that contribute to their own well-being and the well-being of others.
By integrating these CASEL learning objectives into its program model, the SVE Program aims to cultivate a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Through the transformative power of the theatre arts, students develop essential skills and competencies that empower them to succeed in school and beyond.
