End of Year Student Performances
To close out the year students have begun the process of playmaking inspired by the show “The Wiz" which they will see later this school year on Broadway. We are planning a live theater trip for students, as well as a cultural institution collaboration that will offer students an opportunity to meet with one of the producers of The Wiz. As a final presentation, each group will collaborate to create part of a journey of exploration and friendship performed at the end of the year in front of all four schools and invited guests. We are looking forward to sharing SVE students’ work with the broader community.

Celebrating collaborative poetry!
In Unit 2, students focused on collaborative choral poems woven from poems inspired by the phrase “we were raised by” which helped support a longer engagement with writing processes.
As they progressed through the writing process, classmates discussed what resonated with them, brainstormed images and symbols together, wrote independently and then consolidated their ideas.
Throughout, teaching artists took advantage of opportunities to support students' creative expression of their own stories through words, sound, and motion. The resulting poems were inspiring celebrations of the contributions of their families, cultures, neighborhood, school and community.

Program management and teaching artists worked over the summer to create a curriculum that includes 3 units for this year's program; Unit 1 – Theatre is Storytelling. Unit 2 – Telling Our Stories, Unit 3 – Forging Futures.

SVE All-School Spring Field Trip
170 people, students ,teachers and staff from all four of our SVE schools were thrilled to come together to see The Lion King at The Minkskoff Theater on Broadway. Many of our students had never seen a live theater show and we are excited to continue to expose our students to a variety of kinds of theater throughout their participation in the SVE program.
We chose the Lion King for our first excursion because it is a story familiar to many of our SVE students and a great entry point for their first show. Prior to seeing the show our teaching artists prepared each class for seeing a live show by discussing theater etiquette in various settings as well as preparing them for what to look for in a live show- they discussed lighting, set design, consumes and puppetry.
Teaching artists reviewed folktales and the concept of “adaptation” and made sure students would feel prepared, excited and welcome in a venue that was new and unfamiliar to most. The show was a wonderful experience for our students and inspired some further connections and conversations about what a final sharing will look like.

2024 Young Audiences Conference
Sam Leopold (SVE Program Manager) and Katie Nicholson (Clinical Director) presented a session titled “The Healing Arts: Lessons from a Trauma Informed Theater Program” at the 2024 Young Audiences conference in Chicago in April 2024.
In discussion with the broader PWC team, Sam reflected positively on the experience: “We had the honor of presenting on behalf of the Student Voice and Engagement program at the Young Audiences conference in Chicago last week. We were excited to share our program design and to discuss how we integrate trauma informed and healing centered approaches into our work across the four schools we are working with in the SVE program. It was amazing to be surrounded by other educators, artists, and administrators who are doing transformative work in the classroom to better the lives of students across the country.”
