After dropping the puck at the centre ice face-off spot, skate backwards to the boards as quickly as possible to prevent player skating around or behind you.
Always pursue the play as quickly as possible.
By shoulder checking and communicating with your Linesmen you can keep on top of any potential problems.
If the puck is on the same side of the ice as you are, follow the play from a distance of 5 - 8 m.
When the play is on the opposite side of the ice, follow 2.5-3.0 m behind the play.
To reduce your stops and starts and remain in position, skate in a Figure 8.
Many altercations occur near the net. Once play is stopped, move to a position no farther than 3 m from the net.
This position provides the best site lines, and from this position your presence and verbal communication will help to deter any altercations.
Always stay out of No Man’s Land and use proper end zone positioning.
