Module 5: Multimodal Community Product/Tool
This module is literally an extension of the research project that you conducted in module 4. In module four, you conducted small research systematically and scientifically. It was in written or unimodal form. Therefore, this module encourages you to present the same research or finding multimodally, or digitally and multimodally:
The term multimodal refers to the use of different modes of communication and persuasion. These modes might include words, text, (typography), visuals, graphics, animation, video (iconography), sounds, oral (spoken), aural (hearing), and non-verbal forms of communication, among many others (p. 398).
While conducting your project, you might have come across some issues that the community or agency needed to address but have not done so. If you find such gaps, you can fill in the gap by compositing a multimodal product that the community or agency can use to reach a large number of this target audience. If you cannot find any gap, you can create a digital multimodal product that shares your findings or issues with the community or agency.
“Is there a group of people that the organization is missing? Are the communications from your organizations persuasive enough? Is there a form of communication that your organization doesn’t use but you think would reach more people? Or, is your organization doing a great job? Whatever your answer, in Module 5, you will craft a product or tool that supports your organization’s efforts to reach its targeted audiences.” (p. 398)
This way, both you, as a researcher, and the community will benefit from it. Alternatively, you can also advocate some social changes through your multimodal composition. You will share it in class, receive feedback, and produce a final multimodal product:
Multimodal Community Product/Tool: Students will create multimodal product or tool based on the needs of their community partner, organization, or a topic they are exploring. This can be an individual or group assignment to be completed with classmates focused on a similar topic. The goal of this project is to synthesize the research and writing students have done and present it to their classmates and/or chosen community. (p. 398)
Therefore, the objective of this module is not only to make you aware of the community issues that you have raised since module it, but also to encourage students to be familiar with the changing nature of compositions, that is digital multimodal compositions.
