Welcome to Mammoth Science Resources
This tool helps you explore X-linked monohybrid crosses, allowing you to visualize potential offspring combinations from parents with different alleles. Follow the steps below to complete the activity.
Part 1: Drag and Drop Parent Gametes
Review Parent 1 Gametes
You will see two gametes under Parent 1 labeled as XA and Xa. These represent the alleles for Parent 1.
Review Parent 2 Gametes
There are three possible gametes for Parent 2: XA, Xa, and Y.
Assign Gametes to the Punnett Square
Drag and drop the gametes from Parent 1 into the top two boxes of the Punnett square (Boxes 2 and 3).
Drag and drop the gametes from Parent 2 into the left side boxes (Boxes 4 and 7).
Note: You do not need to validate this step.
Part 2: Drag and Drop F1 Combinations
Drag and Drop F1 Genotypes
In the section labeled Possible F1 Combinations, you will find five possible combinations:
XAXA
XAXa
XaXa
XAY
XaY
Place the Correct F1 Combinations
Drag and drop the correct F1 combinations into boxes 5, 6, 8, and 9 of the Punnett square.
If your F1 combinations are correct, the boxes will turn green. If they are incorrect, they will turn red.
Boxes 5, 6, 8, and 9 are the only ones you need to complete.
Part 3: Phenotypic Ratios
Select the Correct Phenotypic Ratios
Below the Punnett square, you will see dropdown menus for selecting the number of each type of offspring:
Normal Daughters
Carrier Daughters
Affected Daughters
Normal Son
Affected Son
Choose the Correct Values
Use the dropdowns to select the number of each phenotype (0, 1, 2, etc.) based on the F1 combinations you completed in Part 2.
Validate Phenotypic Ratios
Click the "Validate Phenotypic Ratios" button to check your answers.
Correct selections will highlight in green; incorrect selections will turn red.
Part 4: Phenotypic Percentages
Select the Correct Phenotypic Percentages
In this section, select the percentage of each phenotype from the dropdowns (0%, 50%, or 100%):
Normal Daughters
Carrier Daughters
Affected Daughters
Normal Son
Affected Son
Validate Phenotypic Percentages
After making your selections, click the "Validate Phenotypic Percentages" button to check your answers.
Correct percentages will highlight in green, while incorrect ones will turn red.
Part 1: Drag and drop gametes into the Punnett square.
Part 2: Drag the correct F1 combinations into the square (green = correct, red = incorrect).
Part 3: Select the phenotypic ratios and validate your choices.
Part 4: Select the phenotypic percentages and validate your answers.
Complete each step and use the validation features to check your understanding of X-linked crosses!
Objective: To complete and validate a Punnett square for a monohybrid cross and determine genotypic and phenotypic ratios based on your results.
