Welcome to Mammoth Science Resources
Objective: To complete and validate a Punnett square for a monohybrid cross and determine genotypic and phenotypic ratios based on your results.
Materials Needed: Access to the online monohybrid cross generator.
Set Up Your Punnett Square
Part 1: Completing the Punnett Square
You will see a blank Punnett square divided into 9 boxes.
Drag and drop the parent alleles (P1 gametes) into the specified boxes according to the instructions:
Place the first P1 gamete in box 2 and the second P1 gamete in box 3.
Place the second set of P2 gametes in box 4 and box 7.
Using the F1 genotype combinations, drag and drop the combinations that correspond to the parent gametes. If correct, they will turn green.
Part 2: Validating Genotypic and Phenotypic Ratios
After completing the Punnett square, look at boxes 5, 6, 8, and 9 for the resulting allele combinations.
Use the dropdown menus or text fields to enter the genotypic and phenotypic ratios based on these results.
Click the "Analyze results" button to check if your ratios match the expected results.
Step 3: Analyze Your Results
Review the feedback provided by the generator.
If your results are correct, you’ll see a message confirming your accuracy.
If not, review the material provided to understand where you might have gone wrong.
Make corrections as needed and try again.
Step 4: Reflect and Report
After successfully completing the generator, take note of the following:
The genotypic ratios (e.g., AA, Aa, aa).
The phenotypic ratios (e.g., dominant trait - A_ vs. recessive trait - aa).
Write a summary of your findings and any observations you made about how the allele combinations affected the outcomes.
Important Tips:
Double-check your allele placements: Ensure you follow the specific instructions for placing P1 gametes.
Review Mendel's laws: Understanding dominant and recessive traits will help you correctly interpret the results.
Use hints wisely: If you’re stuck, the generator provides helpful hints that can guide you to the correct solution.
