USC Public Archaeology Day

In summer 2026 USC students gave tours of the archaeology excavations and shared recent discoveries with visitors!

For six weeks this past summer, eight undergraduate students participated in an archaeological field school. The students spent the first week at Sesquicentennial State Part and the last two weeks on USC's Horseshoe.

Fall Field Day

On October 26th 2024, the Public Heritage Lab hosted a table at the Archaeological Society for South Carolina's Fall Field Day at the Cayce Historical Museum

For six weeks this past summer, eight undergraduate students participated in an archaeological field school. The students spent the first two weeks at Sesquicentennial State Part, then a week at Redcliffe Plantation, and finally three weeks on USC's Horseshoe. 

In spring 2024, USC Honors students kicked off excavations on the horseshoe in their service-learning class: "Digging Through the Past: Exploring the Archaeological Resources at USC."

HBCU Spring Break Excavations at Redcliffe Plantation 2024

Students from HBCUs throughout South Carolina spent their spring break learning archaeological methods at Redcliffe State Park in this collaboration between USC, SCSU, and SCPRT.

For six weeks in summer 2023, USC students participated in an archaeological field school at Sesquicentennial State Park. Learn more abou their discoveries here! 

Students from HBCUs around South Carolina spent their Spring Break excavating Rose Hill Plantation. Their goal was to uncover artifacts from the African American workers who lived and worked there to better understand their lives while on the plantation. 

During fall semester 2023, Dr. Kelly Goldberg hosted volunteer public lab nights at USC in which volunteers learned how to wash archaeological artifacts from various sites across South Carolina. 

In February 2023, Dr. Kelly Goldberg (College of Arts & Sciences), Carla Klehm and Malcolm Williamson from the University of Arkansas' Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, gave a two-day photogrammetry workshop through a McCausland Innovation Grant.
