Digital technologies have transformed the ways archaeologists, museums, and heritage organizations document, preserve, and share cultural heritage. The Public Heritage Lab uses photogrammetry, 3D scanning, and 3D printing to create accurate digital models and physical replicas of archaeological artifacts and historic objects. These technologies support research, conservation, education, and public engagement by expanding access to collections while reducing the need to handle fragile or irreplaceable materials. Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry is the process of creating highly detailed 3D models from a series of overlapping photographs. By photographing an object or archaeological feature from multiple angles, specialized software identifies shared points between images and reconstructs them into an accurate three-dimensional model. Photogrammetry is a non-invasive, cost-effective method for documenting cultural heritage, making it ideal for archaeological artifacts, historic structures, landscapes, and excavation sites. The resulting models can be used for research, conservation, education, virtual exhibits, and public interpretation, allowing users to examine and interact with cultural heritage from anywhere in the world.
In addition to photogrammetry, the Public Heritage Lab uses an Artec Space Spider handheld 3D scanner to create highly accurate digital models of artifacts and other cultural heritage objects. Unlike photogrammetry, which reconstructs 3D models from overlapping photographs, the Space Spider projects structured light onto an object and records its geometry with submillimeter precision. This technology is particularly useful for objects with smooth or reflective surfaces, intricate details, or complex shapes that can be difficult to capture using photography alone. By combining photogrammetry and structured-light scanning, we can select the most effective method for documenting each object while producing high-quality digital models for research, conservation, education, and public interpretation.
The Public Heritage Lab uses a Prusa MK4S 3D printer to produce durable replicas of archaeological artifacts and other cultural heritage objects. Using digital models created through photogrammetry or 3D scanning, we print high-quality replicas in PLA, a lightweight and environmentally friendly bioplastic. These replicas provide opportunities for hands-on learning, museum exhibits, research, and public outreach while helping protect fragile or irreplaceable original artifacts from unnecessary handling. To create realistic reproductions, the printed models are hand-painted by students in the University of South Carolina's School of Visual Art and Design, combining archaeological accuracy with artistic expertise.
