Our 2024 Field Season was a lab season. We worked to catalog, photograph, and record artifacts from our 2018-2023 excavations, especially ceramics.
We were honored to be joined by project ceramist, Dr. Carmen Sarjeant, who worked with our team to train them on our ceramic typology and assist with ceramic sorting and analysis.
Participating in the project were two University of Oregon undergrads, Gabby Shaffer and Marly Howell. Both students will be studying ceramics as part of their undergrad research projects.
We were happy to have several Cambodian archaeologists (including previous project participants) join us to help with our ceramics analysis. Thanks to the following individuals for their excellent help and participation:
DY Keo (Department of Culture, Battambang)
TUON Narith (Department of Culture, Battambang)
TEAV Sreyniet (Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Phnom Penh)
PHOLA Phan (Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Phnom Penh)
NGUON Chandariya (Cambodia Closing Initiative Intern)
SEA Sophearun (Cambodia Closing Initiative Intern)
We had two Royal University of Fine Arts students, KEO CHhornlyly and SIENG Panha join us to be trained in our ceramic typology and learn about ceramics recording.
University of Oregon graduate student, Zachary Dierks, joined the project to work on flotation of soils to gather macrobotanical remains for his Masters and PhD research.
University of Oregon graduate student, Tiyas Bhattacharyya, joined the project to begin analysis of faunal remains from the project.
We were thrilled to release the publication of our Khmer language comic book at a Dissemination Day event at Baset village on July 18, 2024. We were honored that this event was presided over by His Excellency PRAK Sonnara, from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. The event also included speeches from Project Directors Carter and Stark, the local Heritage Police representative, and Mr. KIM Sophorn of the Department of Culture Battambang. As part of the event, all participants received a comic book, and we screened part of the KS Documentary series on the project. We also displayed some of our artifacts and had project participants shared information on our project's findings.
