SHOULD I FACTORY RESET?
If your already modded, no.
If your not modded, optional.
if you do decide you want to factory reset, only do it if your running software version 3.65 or above just in case there is an update block in place that needs removing first.

If your unsure if to factory reset, don't.
Before following the guide it is sometime a good idea to start with a clean system to help avoid any issues, to possibly free up space, remove the PSN account and to possibly make the mod process cleaner. but if your running software lower than 3.65 then try to update first to see if theres a block in place. (removing the update block)
If you only format the memory card, this will retain the PSN login information and any previously installed plugins and various other system files. All you will loose is any installed apps and games.
If you fully factory restore then this will wipe ALL information from the system including PSN details and anything stored on the Sony memory card
if you perform a restore with the Sony memory card removed you will still be asked to format the card when you reinsert it and loose all your data on that card.
A fresh format or system restore is totally optional as you may have save game data, music, videos, images or purchased games that you didnt want to loose.
The only way to remove the current PSN account on your system 'before' modding is with a system restore, otherwise you can actually remove the account easily 'after' the mod process by using an app called 'Simple Account Switcher'
If you have issues with the mod process starting (i.e. the website doesnt run or crashes the system often) then it may be a good idea to update to the latest firmware first which is currently 3.74
PSN ACCOUNT
If your not factory resetting, continue as normal. you can remove / replace the current PSN after the mod (if required)
If your going through the setup up after a factory reset, you'll need to add a PSN account
If you prefer to not use your primary Playstation account (for safety and privacy reasons) then use a phone or computer to create a new account first before you continue

A factory reset will remove the PSN account linked and you will ideally need to login to an account,
sometimes if you try to create an account on the device itself it fails so instead, create one using your phone or computer.
After modding you can remove the current PSN account using 'Simple Account Switcher' after this you will then be able to sign into another previously created account.
If your having issues logging into a PSN account its due to either being on a firmware lower than the latest, or because of how Sony wants you to login. to help with this click here
CHECKS BEFORE WE BEGIN
Open the Settings app and goto System, System Information.
Check your current 'System Software' version and what 'Capacity' (if any) so that we know how best to proceed from here.
Choose the appropriate statement
If you see symbols after the software number then this shows that the system is already modded
The existing mod could be removed if you are looking for a fresh start otherwise you can follow the guide from 'Step 3' to reinstall the apps if they are missing.
If the SD Card wasn't formatted and all your is still threre, you can use the 'Quick Remounter' tool to reassign the SD to the system.

This guide requires you to be running software version 3.65 or above, so if you are running a lower firmware version then you will need to update the software first then come back here to continue
To install the required apps your device will need a little storage to start with
The 1000 (phat) will show as Capacity - if you dont have an official sony memory card inserted, dont worry as the internal 1gb can be unlocked HERE or jump to 1m 52s into The official video guide by pressing HERE
If your 1000 (phat) does have a memory card you may need to format it, but you can still unlock the internal 1gb storage and remove the official card
