Meaning of the title
프로푼디스 = Profundis = the depths = deep, abyss, pit, bottom, deep sea. Profundis refers to Mazzaroth, where Almuten is located. It’s also an apocalyptic worldview itself. It is also meant to show the grim situations that characters find themselves in. From Yugeon’s point of view, Shinje’s twisted love is the abyss, and from Shinje’s point of view, Yugeon is the abyss.
Nietzsche said.
“If you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
“He who fights with monsters must take care lest he thereby become a monster.”
The Awakening Management Headquarters commits monstrous acts such as conducting biological experiments and kidnapping people in the name of catching monsters.
Hunters also treat guides as if they are tools and exploit them without any guilt.
Looking at Shinje and Taein’s past (both were recipients of scorn and disgust from the guides when they were vulnerable) and guides who had regarded Yugeon with contempt, guides were also never just one-sided victims.
Shinje loves Yugeon in a twisted way. He himself knows this, and he monologues that he knows only this way because he is a deep-sea fish that has lived his entire life at the bottom of the deep sea. But he also doesn’t have any intention of reflecting.
Pushing the other person to the limit and then letting them free, slowly suffocating them and isolating them, making them think of nothing but their tormenter, but have no intention to kill them.....
Doesn’t it resemble the way Almuten plays with humans?
Love and Hate
The main theme of ‘Profundis’ is love and hate. I wanted to write a story in which the characters who had already lived a miserable life meet each other and proceed to ruin their lives even more, hurt each other, hate each other terribly, but still, I wanted to write a love story nonetheless.
Love and hate are contradictory emotions. But I think it’s also possible that love and hate can exist at the same time.
There are plenty of contradictions in my work.
Almuten means ‘the most powerful star’ in astrological terms. Whenever we think of stars, we always imagine them high up in the sky. However, Mazzaroth, Almuten’s den, is described as the lowest and deepest place (abyss). There’s even a deep sea in Mazzaroth in the place where the sky is supposed to be.
In order to be freed from the abyss (=to rise above the surface), you must first face the abyss (=go down to the very depths).
A guide, who are usually considered useless in raids since they are non-combatants, became essential for killing Almuten.
Shinje intended to die with Yugeon, but changed his mind at the last moment.
Yugeon saved Shinje because he hated and loved Shinje to the point of wanting to kill him.
TMI related to work
The character whose lines I enjoyed the most writing was Heesu. A bright, perverted, unhinged character who consistently had no morals until the very end..... I really wanted to try writing a character like that. ^^; He’s very cute and charming, and rarely puts on pretenses. I think Heesu’s charm(?) is that he casually mixes curses and swear words as if nothing’s wrong even when he always speaks with honorifics on a regular basis.
Among the four, Chan was the one who had changed the most in regards to Yugeon. “hey” “guide” “you punk” “this guide bastard” > “baek yugeon” “yugeon-ah, hyung~”
Chan suffered the least misfortune out of the four gongs, so his way of thinking is also the most ordinary. Either in a good way or a bad way.
He didn’t want Shinje to bring Yugeon in their mess, and he was the one who rejected Yugeon most openly at the beginning.
In Chan’s point of view, there are several descriptions such as, ‘I don’t want to win, but I don’t like losing; I don’t want to lose the guide to someone else, but I don’t want to put in the effort pursuing him’, like that.
I would say it’s craftiness and selfishness that he naturally possesses because he had a normal childhood and grew up in an ordinary environment. (I don’t want to work, but I want to earn a lot of money~ I know everyone has thought of something like that at least once in their lives. ^^)
Shinje’s habit of smiling, openly asking if he’s pretty, quoting divine comedy or bible verses all stemmed from his longing for humanity. He wanted to become a human from something not-human.
Taein has a strong tendency to control. It was revealed at first glance when he thought that he would need to ‘discipline’ Yugeon, or when he spanked Yugeon on his back. It is only this much since he has a lot of self-restraint.
The first meeting between Munyeong and Seulbi was simply a cliche itself, in which Munyeong dramatically saved Seulbi, who was being cornered by a lousy crowd of Hunters.
Taein is relentless to Shinje and Chan, but he is a little bit soft towards Heesu. (telling Shinje that ‘Heesu wants to see the new guide’, or telling Yugeon that ‘Heesu is used to parting’...) There is no other reason, except that he’s young.
Because of the guilt of not being able to protect his little sister, he is unconsciously soft towards children (Yugeon and Heesu) who are 10 years younger than him. He also thinks that if his little sister had survived and grown up safely, she would have been around their age.
Shinje’s preferences and discernment for material stuff were all thoroughly learned through socialization (or pretends to be) after the age of 18. He gives off the impression that he might be very picky about things like clothes and food, and really fussy about it, but in reality, he’s not really impressed with anything. The act he puts on is just a husk and there’s only smoke inside.
Yugeon is a popular type even though he is completely unaware of himself. He is not only the perfect type to attract crazy people, as Chan said in the main story, but also popular with the elderly, babies, and animals. In actuality, Yugeon is reluctant to approach first because he fears that the other people would shun him since he had heard a lot from others that he looks cold and hard to approach.
I sincerely hope that even after reaching the end of this story, Yugeon, Shinje, Taein, Chan, and Heesu will remain in your memories. Thank you for joining us on our 7-month journey to find the light from the depths of the abyss.

Q & A
Apart from what was mentioned in the novel, does Chan-nyang often go to Yugeon’s room? (in the form of a cat).
Occasionally, he snooped around the corridor, but he had never run into Yugeon except for the time in the main story.
What does Taein wear when he sleeps? / I’m curious about the kid’s pajamas!
Taein: Black short-sleeved T-shirt and plain sweatpants.
Chan: Topless + underwear/shorts.
Heesu: T-shirts, cardigans, hoodies, pajamas, sleeping pants, etc.
Shinje: Just home wear. In fact, even at night, when an emergency report comes in, he has to go out, and because of insomnia, there are more days when he doesn’t (can’t) sleep than he does, so pajamas are meaningless.
Yugeon: Anything that is comfortable out of the clothes he has. Mostly just T-shirts that he can’t wear outside because the necklines are stretched out…

It’s just mainly black. As far as other colors go, some of them are gray with a pattern.

There’s not much change in expression, but his eyes would sparkle. He will talk a little more. It’s pretty obvious since he would fidget with his fingertips or wriggle his toes when excited.
What’s Yugeon’s fetus* name?
Gomgom-ie.* When pregnant with Yugeon, his mother suffered almost no side effects including morning sickness (morning sickness was hell with Heeseong). Why is my baby so gentle~ What are you seriously thinking about in your mom’s stomach?~ Thus, it became gomgom-ie.

How did Chan come to make the decision to join Shinje and build Erewhon after being discharged?
He quit the center because they were dicks, but he was also at a loss for what to do in the future. At that time, Shinje appeared in front of him. Ere.. what’s that thing.. whatever, YOLO!!! And he accepted it without hesitation.
I’m curious about the guiding fit rate between Yugeon and Erewhon members! / Chan or Shinje, who is more compatible with Yugeon?
It’s between 10~30% with the other members, and 40~?% with Shinje. It varies depending on condition and the amount of physical contact, so it’s not that constant.
Chan is a cat, so does he hate dogs…?
He doesn’t like them. This is why Yugeon is often compared to a dog in Chan’s point of view.

Characters’ TMI
Shinje likes to slouch on the sofa and bed. But it’s not the kind of plain laziness, like oversleeping until the afternoon, or being late for a schedule. The influence of a long military life.
Yugeon spent most of his time with Heeseong and middle-aged F-class Hunters, so he’s not good at dealing with people younger than himself.
Taein drinks often and can handle his drinks well. But only when he’s alone.
From the moment he awakened, Chan had completely abandoned the idea of getting married and starting a family. Still, he sometimes wonders about that kind of life.
Heesu thinks it is attractive and likes it when Yugeon treats him harshly.

Brain malfunctions for a few seconds the moment he eats spicy food, and then quietly looks for water. With sweet or savory food, his whole face lights up with an exclamation mark above his head. There’s no significant change in facial expression. Shinje just laughs because he is cute, Chan tries to tease him, Taein is not interested, but Heesu is.
If someone writer knows becomes romantically involved with a member of Erewhon, would you oppose the relationship with this member? Who would it be, and why? (I think I’ll pick Heesu… ㅎㅎ)
I’ll also choose Heesu. If Heesu really likes the other person, he will try to give and do everything he can, but he’s also someone whose personality deviates a lot from a ‘normal’ person and is very unpredictable. He’s the type to go murder his significant other’s boss very casually if they complain that they are having a hard time with their boss at work. Is that so, baby??~ It must be very difficult. ㅠㅠ and stabby stab stab.
In terms of looks alone, out of the four who did Yugeon like more? / Who’s the most handsome out of the four? I think Yugeon’s taste is somewhere between Shinje and Heesu. He’s naturally very blunt, so he is not immune to friendly, charming, and affectionate people. “Uh...?...?” He then would be easily captivated by their face and ends up stumbling over.
Among the characters, the one who objectively has the most beautiful looks is definitely Shinje. The writer’s taste is Yugeon and Taein. I like black-haired cold-looking men. (♡óωó♡)

He has never eaten catnip or churro. It’s his last pride(?) as a human being. Sometimes he went into the box as if possessed, but immediately got out grumpily when he came to his senses, although it was already too late for that. He sings sometimes, unconsciously.

Shinje: Business Administration major. Gossips of him spread to the whole school when he came in riding a Ferrari. There were a lot of comments asking him to refrain doing such on the school bulletin board, as students were feeling the gap between them. When he found out, he signed up and left a comment.

Taein: Law student. He rarely runs into undergrads since he only goes back and forth from the classes. These days he’s concerned about a child (Yugeon) who seems to be working as a work scholarship student at the law research library.
Chan: Physical Education student. Living in a dormitory. When he runs around the campus for morning exercise, he often runs into Yugeon who also jogs in the mornings. He wonders why he’s working so hard when he’s not even a sports major or in a sports club.
Yugeon: Department of Electrical Engineering. Lives with his brother near the school. The curfew is 8 o’clock even though he doesn’t live with his parents. His brother is sensitive, so he gets stressed if he goes home late.
Heesu: Department of Visual Design. School was getting boring and difficult, so he kept skipping classes, until he went ‘fuck this’ and started a YouTube channel. Then one day, he got really mad while working late on papers, so he completely dropped out, and currently a hit YouTuber.
Shinje is often described as a flower, but if you had to pick one flower that would go well with him, what would it be?

Heesu: It's different every time. Currently into salted caramel latte.
What would be Shinje’s favorite outfit?
Uniform for work. For formal occasions - three-piece suit + black leather sleeve garter + cashmere or wool coat + necktie pin + cuffs + handkerchief in the front pocket. For home wear, he prefers thin knitwear, long-sleeved T-shirts, cotton pants, and cardigans.
Erewhon members’ favorite color / Profundis kids’ favorite color or matching color / Do you have any symbolic colors in mind for Erewhon Team 1 and Yugeon-ie?
I haven’t decided on specific colors. The colors that go well with them together (the color of the clothes they like to wear) are as follows:
Yugeon: blue, gray, black, dark green
Shinje: white, ivory, burgundy, blue-gray, purple
Heesu: lemon, caramel, mint, sky blue, light pink, beige
Chan: bright colors such as red/blue on a black base
Taein: brown, charcoal, black, gray

Shinje: normal position, face-to-face, standing*
Heesu: using equipment/props, doing it in an uncomfortable position in a small space, or with multiple partners
Chan: likes to have the other person entirely spread out under him.
Yugeon: doesn’t have a favorite position. The compatibility is not bad… (but Chan is too big so it’s a bit difficult) He just wishes it was less embarrassing and less painful. He can endure pain, but doing it while facing each other is the most embarrassing thing.

When he’s with Shinje, he always takes care of him well, he either cooks for him, or takes him to a restaurant. Even if he has to leave first for work, he orders room service before he leaves. Sometimes, Taein takes care of him instead if he receives instructions from Shinje. When both of them are busy, Chan or Heesu (to play with him on the pretext of having a meal) will visit Yugeon’s room. If all four of them are busy, he goes down to the cafeteria and buys a simple menu.

Heesu: bi-naeng, but he asks for some broth and pour it in a little bit.

Chan and Taein. Heesu probably also has. Shinje wouldn’t. Their first times were in their mid-to-late teens. (Heesu is a bit earlier than that) Because of the nature of guiding, the Awakened people tend to have their first experience much earlier.
Who’s Eise’s favorite gong? And why!!!
All four of them have different charms, so it’s hard to choose my favorite. Still, I’ll have to give one vote to Shinje, our main gong!

All the gongs are of a size that protrudes upward even when Yugeon holds it with both hands. Chan’s overall the biggest, Shinje and Taein are similar (Shinje’s a little longer, and Taein’s a little thicker), and Heesu is still growing ^^. But since he’s young, he gets easily hard, lasts long, and can immediately go another round even after he just finished.
I want to know about the skinship that Erewhon team members prefer!
Shinje: sitting on his lap

What do Shinje and Chan think of each other and what feelings do they have for each other?
Shinje > Chan: Until now, their interests were very different from each other, so they just bicker and rarely had any serious friction. But he thinks he’s starting to see that these days. He’ll have to definitely trample on it sometime.
Chan > Shinje: He often wonders why he’s working under such a psycho bastard, but he knows he’ll just bum around if he leaves Erewhon, so he’s holding it in. There’s nothing he can’t do if he has to seriously squabble for the leader position, but it’s tiresome so he just let it go. He’s starting to get annoyed with how that bastard is acting these days.

Please tell us the behind-the-scenes for Profundis!
It just came to my mind one day~! I’ve been wanting to try writing a multi-gong work. I also wanted to write a modern fantasy where a lot of people with supernatural powers appeared and showed off their abilities.
Then I thought it over again. If the Hunterverse or guideverse ever existed in real life, I feel like their reality wouldn’t be as exciting and cool as it often appears in creative works. Aren’t those people who have to endlessly hunt monsters that no one has any idea when they will disappear, and those who have to suffer terrible pain if they are not guided, all struggling in despair?
From there, I started to map out Profundis. If my previous work, Dead Man Switch, is the story of people who suddenly encounter disaster in a closed space while living ordinary lives, Profundis is the story of a world decades after a disaster struck and where everyone has become accustomed to it.
Was there any difference from the initial setting?
Yugeon’s situation was a lot more terrible in the initial setting. The first chapter opened with Yugeon being arrested for murder. As a kind of punishment for criminals, he was forcibly brought in to guide the gongs… (I’ll stop here) However, I thought it would be too hardcore and wouldn’t be very interesting, so I softened it to a mild taste.
What’s your secret to writing those scenes very hot and dirty?

Please imagine whichever way you like. Isn’t that the beauty of novels? Regardless of the universe, I think at least Heesu will always be neatly shaved.
The first time the main characters had a wet dream, and the content of the dream?
Chan: When he was in middle school. Dreamed about a girl he had a crush on, and after waking up, he slammed the wall in shame and went to wash his hands without his parents knowing.
Heesu: Early teens. About the guide he was most interested in at the time.
Shinje: When he was at the center. He didn’t have a dream. Just physiologically.
Taein: Late teens. He doesn’t remember the dream.
Yugeon: Mid-late teens. It was a dream that had nothing to do with sexual stuff, but it was still a wet dream. He was really flustered at first. At that time, his older brother was already in his 20s, and there were no boys around his age, so there was no one to teach him sex education… He even wondered if he caught a disease. He later found out when he overheard the middle-aged men talking dirty.

Stretchy, tight square underwear. Black waistband. All have the same design, only different colors. (black, charcoal, navy, dark green) He bought those in a bundle to wear.
I wonder how Shinje will react if Yugeon calls him hyung.
With his eyes wide open, he will stare at him with a big smile. Then he will tell Yugeon to call him honey next time. If Yugeon refuses, he’ll put on a sad face and say, “Really? Even if this pretty hyung asks you to do it?” He will start adding hyung this hyung that everytime he speaks, making Yugeon regret it.
Have Chan ever tried to have sex with the beast body?
He had never tried it. The body might be a beast, but the mind is still human, so he would never do it with animals, but he also thinks it would be disgusting and uncomfortable to do it with a person with the body of an animal.
What does Yugeon-ie usually think about before going to bed or when he tunes out of his surroundings?
Worrying about hyung, thinking about upcoming battles, thinking about Shinje and other Team 1 members, (very occasionally) thinking about delicious food he had that day. He doesn’t think about anything when he’s moving his body, such as exercising, grooming equipment, or repairing machines, etc. Just free from all thoughts.
I’m curious about Chan, Heesu and Yugeon’s sleeping habits.
Chan: Toss-and-turns very aggressively. Kicks off all the blankets and sprawls out to sleep. He would hug the one next to him and wouldn’t let go all night.
Heesu: Sometimes sleeps with his thumb in his mouth.
Yugeon: Sleeps as if he’s not sleeping. He can sleep while sitting, sleep with arms crossed, or sleep leaning against a wall. The others just think he’s just closing his eyes, so they try to talk to him and get surprised when they find he’s actually asleep. He tends to sleep quietly, but strangely, whenever he wakes up, his hair would be a magpie house.
If Taein, Chan, Heesu, and Shinje used perfume, what would they use? / I wonder what kind of perfume Taein, Chan, and Heesu use!

Chan: He just gets angry, but he doesn’t even know why he’s angry.
Shinje: He still has a pretty smile on his face and is very gentle, but very obvious that something’s wrong.
Heesu: Sticks out his lips, grumbles, and then goes to kill the other person.

Chan: A big eater, and eats everything well. He likes anything with meat in it. He’s a korean food person, so he prefers rice and meat combination to steak. Pork belly, pork ribs, barbequed beef, braised short ribs, etc.
Yugeon: He’s not picky about food. He tends to empty it cleanly as it is given. He doesn’t leave leftovers but rarely asks for more. Eating neatly and happily makes the person who cooked it happy.
Heesu: He gets tired of one type of food very quickly, but when there are several types of food, he eats more than expected. A big eater. Likes buffets, korean table d’hote, afternoon tea sets topped with layered desserts.

Profundis / Dead Man Switch AU
What if the main characters of Profundis fall into the world of Dead Man Switch?
Is it the situation where they transmigrate into a different world with the settings and abilities from the original world intact, or is it an AU?
If it’s the former, I think it will be very favorable for the protagonists of Profundis. Since they come from a world where fighting monsters the size of buildings is a daily occurrence.....

Taein, the law school student, grasped the situation only after many of the fellow law students who continued studying cases with exhausted faces even though they heard the chaos outside became victims. He tried to smash the zombie’s head with anything he could get his hands on. It was then he realized that the thick law books could be deadly weapons if he put his mind on it. He tried to contact his mother and sister while holding a blood-soaked tome.
Turns out, Chan, the physical education student, had a separate mind and body. Even while having a mental breakdown, his body continued to move, knocking zombies out of his way and bashing their heads. No, this is fucking crazy (1 kill) What the fuck (2 kill) What’s wrong with these bastards;;; (3 kill) Euaaaah shit (4 kill) Fucking out of nowhere? (5 kill)
Heesu from visual design department was still pretty calm even while the people around him were dying. However, the moment he saw his Macbook smashed by a zombie, his expression completely changed. He hacked away the zombie’s neck again and again with the corner of his Macbook, and kept doing it even though the neck was already separated. Wow… This is fucking annoying. Hey… you know what? Even if you were alive, I would have killed you.
After that, he adapted really well as if he was born in the apocalypse universe from the beginning. The zombie incident he encountered while living a boring life was so much fun. Anyone would be reluctant to have him as an ally, but it would be much scarier to have him as an enemy.
What if the main characters of Dead Man Switch fall into the world of Profundis?
I think Hohyeon would be a guide from the Awakening Management Headquarters. A dark red uniform would look good on him. His abilities aren’t that strong (possible to cover up to F-C ranks, but it drops off rapidly from B and higher), but he’s mentally strong and calm, so he’s often mobilized when Espers run wild out of control. He hasn’t been able to find someone who has a high fit rate and good compatibility yet, so he’s just working as a support team guide. Without a fixed partner, he always gets called in at any time… Shitty classes, shitty career. He cusses out internally a thousand times a day, but always has a business smile on the outside. Pretty much a sad soldier’s life.
Yeongwon would be an independent Hunter. Rank would be A or S. Ability would be future sight. The ability is so overwhelmingly strong that he is seeing the future at all times, driving him crazy when he starts to mix up with the present. It is not uncommon for people with mental abilities to have their personalities entirely messed up or have their minds broken when they fail to overcome their abilities… (like Heesu)
The two first met during a mission. It was Hohyeon’s first time on the field.
