In general for any interview, one must be ready to answer few basic questions related to :
Qualification : I have completed my Bachelors in Electronics engineering, Masters and PhD in VLSI Design with career goals oriented towards academics. My main motivation towards academics are the professors who guided me throughout the journey. Moreover, teaching and research is domain where one gives to the society, has mental peace and sufficient growth in terms of monetary benefits. I had my priorities cleared from my school and college days. A professor should be able to explain theoretical concepts in layman's terms and should include real life examples so that students can relate theory and practical. Extra curricular activities are important in resume and interview. I love to spend my leisure time watching movies, exploring tech updates, playing lawn tennis, playing moth organ and cooking.
If asked why I pursued specialization in electronics, I would rationalize it that being an electronics engineer allow subjects from instrumentation, computer science, and electrical engineering. We as electronics engineers have knowledge of both software tools (coding) as well as hardware implementation (PCB design for example). Moreover, we have a better scope for joining private and public sector companies as R&D engineer.
My short term career goals (1-4 years) include joining academics (Assistant Professor) in a reputed university or act as part of R&D group of some prestigious organization. The long term goals (5 > years) include joining as postdoctoral fellow and executing some exceptional research work commendable for prestigious award (Nobel prize).
Some core VLSI interview concepts : Questions and answers
1. Define setup and hold time. What are the conditions for setup and hold violation? How these conditions are gained explain. What do you mean by metastable state. And few questions on finding frequency of the circuit given in this topic.
2. Design circuits with DFF and TFF separately satisfying these conditions:When Input=1 then output=1 and When Input=0 then output=input provided to DFF or TFF
3. Desing not, nand and nor gate using CMOS structure. If PMOS and NMOS are flipped in the CMOS NOT gate structure then what would the function now for this circuit.
4. Questions on NMOS fabrication. What is body effect and its explanation in detail. How Vsb effect can be decreased?
5. CMOS characteristic curve and effect of W/L ratio on the curve.
6. Questions on RC circuits such as HPF and LPF. Draw Vo and Vc graph when T>>RC and T<<RC in both the cases.
7. Design counter that counts 0–7 in just 4 clock cycles
8. You should have clear knowledge on pass gates and transmission gates
9. Using MUX desing AND, OR, XOR etc gates
10. Difference between latch and flip flop. Among these which has higher propagation delay?
11. Static RAM internal structure and explain its read and write operation
12. Some aptitude questions
13. At last when they are done with question round then they try to understand the project which you did in your college life
