OCC uses electronic wait lists. If you would like to add one of my Spanish sections but it's full, be sure to put your name on the wait list through MyCoast. If a spot opens up before the semester begins (and spots often do, as students are figuring out their schedules and dropping and adding classes), the first person on the wait list will be notified via their OCC e-mail that a spot is open, and will then have 24 hours to register and pay for the class. If that person does not register and pay for the class within the 24-hour time frame, they will be dropped from the wait list, and the next person on the list will be notified. If you put your name on a wait list, it is important that you check your OCC e-mail at least once but preferably twice a day so that you don't miss any notifications! Click here for more detailed info.
The electronic wait list is the only way to try to add a section pre-semester. Faculty are unable to add students until after the semester begins. If, for some reason, you can’t or don’t want to put your name on the wait list, you may wish to try to petition to add the course by showing up at the first class meeting. Students who are on the electronic wait list when the semester begins have priority over students who petition by showing up to the first class. All students, those on the wait list and those who are petitioning to add without having put their name on the wait list, should plan to attend the first class meeting. If it is a LIVEONLINE section, you'll need to email me at least 24 hours before the first class meeting to get the Zoom information (dcabanel@occ.cccd.edu).
Any enrolled students who don't show up for the first class (or contact me to let me know that they'll be missing) automatically lose their place, creating potential spaces for students on the wait list. Any students from the wait list who do not show up on the first day also lose their priority position. This may leave spots for others who are petitioning to add. I often know by the end of the day how many spaces are available. In general, if there are enough spaces for all students wishing to add, I let them know that same day. Otherwise, all students hoping to add should plan to return for the second class period.
Any students who don't return for the second class lose their "place" on the wait and petition lists. Often, in the past, it's worked out that there were sufficient spaces by the second class for those who returned to enroll. However, all students must understand that there is no guarantee that spots will open up.
