Technology (and social media) started text-centric. Today, however, images, video, and interactive media dominate how we communicate and share information in the digital age.
Literal meaning:
Digital: Data expressed as 0s and 1s.
Media: Tools that transmit information or entertainment.
Traditional media communicates non-digitally. Think newspapers, books, radio, and TV. But also think of traditional art (painting, drawing, etc)
Digital media allows for interactive, dynamic, and shareable content.
Defining Digital media is hard as it's constantly evolving.
Text – Beyond simple words: structure, hierarchy, style, and readability matter.
Graphics – From basic pixels to complex vector designs.
Raster (Bitmap): Made of pixels, e.g., .jpg, .png, .gif
Vector: Defined by geometric shapes, e.g., .svg, .ai, .pdf
Animation – Sequential images that create motion, like an animated GIF!
Audio – Digitized through sampling; common formats: .mp3, .wav, .midi
Video – Combines visual and audio media to tell stories dynamically.
Text conveys meaning, organization, and hierarchy.
Examples include resumes, blog posts, and social media captions. Well-formatted text communicates more effectively and is easier for readers to scan and understand.
Which resume would you respond to more positively?

Can you imagine interacting with your computer without images?! Today, graphics are a staple, but that wasn't always the case in the computing world. Historically, images had to be scanned or manually digitized.
The image included in this section shows what computing looked like with a GUI (graphical User Interface) and what early graphics looked like as we learned how to create and display digital images.
Today, phones, cameras, and design software make it easy to create and share images.
And AI is now generating them for us?!
Activity - Raster vs. Vector
Today, there are powerful, FREE tools for creating, editing, and exploring graphics.
Open source: GIMP! (install and use locally)
Online Raster: https://pixlr.com/e
Online Vector: https://vectr.com/
Create a simple graphic in each of these programs.
What differences do you notice? What options do you have when you try to export your work? How do you save your working versions?
Coding Graphics? Try this simple SVG tutorial and see how you can create graphics with code!
Animation displays a sequence of static images in rapid succession to mimic real-world motion.
Those images can be drawings or photos.
Think flip books or motion captures like this one.
You can learn how this flip-book animation was made by clicking here.
Animated Gifs
Animated GIFs are also great examples of digital animations. The file format can hold multiple frames and display them in sequence.
You can experiment with making your own animated GIF like the "Yay Happy Face" here using an online tool called Brush Ninja.
Your phone probably has an option to turn a series of photographs into an animated GIF as well.
Activity - Brush Ninja
Brush Ninja is a super simple animation tool - designed to make it as easy as possible for people to get started with traditional animation skills.
Completely online and free!
Save your working files locally as a *.brushninja file
Export your deliverable files as an animated GIF (*.gif)
Check it out at https://brush.ninja/
Audacity is a free audio application that allows you to record, edit, and export audio files
Try it! Use your computer's internal mic or the mic on your headphones to record a test audio file, then export it as a WAV or MP3 file.
Before we think about how we get sound into the computer, let's take a moment to appreciate what sound is.
Watch the video "What is Sound?" in this section.
We digitize sound by sampling.
Sampling involves taking "snapshots" of audio at specific intervals.

Video combines multiple media types and is now dominant on social media and interest-driven platforms.
Consider the hugely popular social platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. These are all video-centric and leading the way in interest-based consumption.
We know this, but do we know what Digital Video IS?
Effective Communication: Know how to create and interpret messages across text, images, audio, and video.
Digital Literacy: Understand how content is produced, shared, and consumed online and be able to create your own!
Career Readiness: Many jobs require familiarity with digital tools and media production.
