Pretest Results

Why?

Teaching digital literacy skills in the modern age is a challenge, to say the least. Most students are coming into my class with only Chromebook experience. They have minimal local computing skills. In my experience, many don't have a concept of what a file even is. Instead of relying on my assumptions, I now have them take the pretest before each unit, and we discuss the results as a class. It helps frame the objectives and shows them they may not know what they think they know about modern computing.

How I Approached This

I used Claude to help me analyze the open-ended responses, spot patterns and misconceptions, and build the charts you see in these results. This made it possible to turn raw pretest data into something useful almost immediately. I will often visualize the results quickly using generative AI to present back to the class for discussion, and it works beautifully.
