You live in a world dominated by SAAS and the Cloud. Understanding it will only make your life easier.
File management is one of the most important digital skills you’ll use in college, work, and life. If you can’t find, store, share, or organize files, you’re wasting time and making life more complicated than it needs to be.
Local files = your backpack
Saved on your computer’s hard drive (Documents, Downloads, Desktop).
To access something in your backpack, you need to have it with you. That's the same with local files. They are only available on the computer or on the drive where you saved them.
Local files can’t be shared directly. If you wanted to share, you would need to email the file, transfer it to a USB drive, or move it to the cloud.
Cloud files = your locker, anywhere.
(Like a video game where you can access all your resources all the time!)
Files stored in the cloud are saved on someone else’s computer (a server) and accessible via the internet. Think Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox.
The cloud makes it easy to share and collaborate with classmates or coworkers.
Open a new browser tab.
Go to your student email via MyCCBC.
Click the App Launcher (aka the waffle) in the upper-left corner.
Select OneDrive.
Go to "My Files" on the left link list
Create a folder called CSIT101.
Upload a file from your computer into your new folder.
Open the file on another device (phone, tablet, or different computer). Did it work?
Optional Challenge: Try editing a shared file with your classmate in real-time. Notice how changes appear instantly!
When you share files or folders, you need to ask yourself:
Who can access it? One person, a small group, or anyone with the link?
What can they do? View only, edit, or comment?
How long is it available? Forever, a few days, or until the project ends?
Pro tip: Always double-check permissions before sharing. It prevents accidents and keeps your work safe.
