When I first logged into Brightspace for this class, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Unit 0 seemed like it was going to be just “housekeeping,” but it ended up teaching me some practical skills I didn’t realize I needed.
The first assignment had me set up a notebook and organize myself. I’ve never really kept notes, so this was hard for me! I hate the way I write, but I'm already getting used to it.
Exploring Brightspace was also eye-opening. I noticed that each instructor designs their page differently, so it forced me to pay attention and learn how to adapt to different layouts. It reminded me that technology isn’t just about knowing the tool, but about knowing how to navigate changing environments.
I also registered for SIMnet and practiced some essentials, including Outlook. That tied directly into writing a professional email for the class. I’ve sent plenty of emails before, but I didn’t think about things like subject lines, signatures, or when to use CC and BCC. Writing it with those rules in mind made me realize that email can make a first impression just like speaking face-to-face.
By the end of the unit, I had also picked up new terms—like “waffle” and “hamburger menu”—that describe everyday icons I’ve seen a million times but never named. Now I can actually talk about them instead of just pointing at the screen.
Overall, Unit 0 gave me more than I expected. It wasn’t just set up. It was a reminder that learning technology is about building habits and awareness, not just checking boxes.
