(Elastic and Scalable System for High-PErformance Reconfigurable Computing)
ESSPER is our developed experimental prototype of an FPGA cluster to extend existing HPC systems.
We are connecting ESSPER to the Fugaku supercomputer for research on accelerating a portion of HPC application workloads with FPGA clusters.
Background
As Moore's Law wanes, we are exploring faster and more energy-efficient alternatives to traditional computing architectures. Reconfigurable devices are well suited for pilot implementations of new hardware architectures, as well as for accelerating certain applications that are difficult to achieve high performance on traditional architectures.
Further Information
More details on ESSPER can be found in this open access paper.
There is also a recorded talk from DATE 2022 introducing ESSPER, as well as slides (also in Japanese).
