What is After Effects?
After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of film making, video games and television production. After Effects can also be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation.
After Effects Process
The first thing I did when starting my after Effects project was brainstorm ideas. After thinking of ideas, I landed on doing a beginner's yoga video.
I then created a mockup of how I wanted each slide in the after effects animation to look.
Each page will have a yoga pose and its name and I wrote down different ways that I wanted to announce them.
I opened up my mockup photos into After Effects. Each photo has its own frame in the animation so that you can edit each one differently. After putting in the mockups, I began creating my final After Effects video.
I needed to create my yoga poses, so I went into Adobe Illustrator and used the pen tool to create each pose.
I then saved each individual pose and opened up the files in After Effects.
I moved each image to where they will be placed on their page. After getting all the basic text and poses on the page, I then began to think about how I wanted to create motion.
To move text, you can use the position and opacity tool. If you want your text to come from sides or from up and down, these are the two tools you would use. You choose a spot where you want your text to be and click the position and opacity to create key frames.
You then drag the blue line back to the beginning and drag the positioning to go up or down or from either side and it will create a key frame. I used these two tools on many of the text in my animation.
To change my text for each different yoga pose, I used a tool called source text. You create one text box and place it where you would like, then you type out your words and click source text. When you need to change your text to a different word, instead of creating a whole new text box, you just change the word and another key frame will appear.
After effects has animation presets on the side bar and they have a variety of effects you can choose from to spice up your animation. They have animations to transform your text from intro to out. I used fade out slow to have my text fade to look smooth. I also used fade in slow so thw words came across the screen at a good pace so they were easy to read.
