Protection of the environment is one of the major issues today. Two schools in Sikkim have incorporated environmental activities into their curriculum. This was done to educate the students about the need to protect and conserve nature for better sustainability.
Sikkim’s Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling has emphasised the need to protect and conserve nature and various schools have taken up environmental activities.
One of the government schools has undertaken several green initiatives to maintain a balanced ecology and biodiversity. The schools won two awards - Sustainability and Biodiversity by WIPRO and TN Khoshoo Earthian Award 2015. To create awareness among the students, sanitation programs and other initiatives are being implemented along with the daily curriculum. The school also monitors the progress of these programs.
The principal of the school, NK Karki said that this is the first time that CCTV cameras were installed in a government school in Sikkim. The school has received the State Green School Award and several other awards. The school also offers mid-day meals to the students.
Another government secondary school has established itself as a renowned school for education and ranks among the best schools in the entire Western region. The school carries out various activities such as bee farming, small cattle farming, gardening, vegetable farming and more. The aim is to provide practical knowledge about the different ways of farming. The school was awarded the ‘Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar 2015’ for its contribution to sustainable development.
The school also won the ‘State Green School Award’ in 2015. The principal of the school, ND Rai said that to manage waste products the students engage in activities for better utilisation. People use old tyres for campfires, especially during the New Year celebrations which are hazardous to health. It damages biodiversity and the environment. Students are being taught to use waste products like tyres to make tables and chairs and more.
Higher education in Sikkim
There are many universities in Sikkim that offer higher education courses in different disciplines. There is one central university, one institute of National importance and four private universities. The quality of education offered is at par with the global standards.
The teaching methodology used helps the students to think analytically and critically. The students are taught to think and solve problems. The students are given theoretical and practical knowledge of the subjects. They are taught beyond the classrooms and seminars by experts, industry visits and meet-ups with alumni are organised.
