Nagaland emphasis on education and the literacy rate of the state is higher than the national average and is around 80%. However, there is a shortage of qualified teachers, especially in remote areas. It also resulted in a high teacher-student ratio. There is a need to improve the infrastructure and provide drinking water and libraries in schools.
The state has implemented several initiatives to improve education. It launched an initiative - Nagaland Education Project - The Lighthouse - Nagaland Enhancing Classroom Teaching And Resources (NECTAR) in 2021. The objective of NECTAR was to enhance the quality of education and improve the learning outcomes in government schools throughout the state.
The key challenge faced by NECTAR was to equip the students with the knowledge and skills required to succeed. This required that the teacher be trained to produce better outcomes. When teachers are trained they become more effective in providing quality education to the students.
Studies have shown that when teachers are given training and technical support it improves the effectiveness of the intervention programs. Research reveals that when professional development activities are implemented which prioritise understanding how students learn and what learning methods improve their learning it improves the teacher's knowledge and effectiveness.
Other benefits for teachers include increased preparedness for new tasks, mastering specific skills, belief in their ability and improved confidence. Seeing their student's success motivates the teachers to continue improving their teaching skills. It will also attract more people to take up the teaching profession. It will also help to address the issue of teacher shortage in the long term.
Promoting girl’s education
The government of Nagaland has implemented several initiatives to promote girl’s education and increase their enrollment and retention in schools. There has been an increase in the number of females opting for education though gender disparities need to be addressed. Girls face barriers while accessing education like poverty, cultural beliefs and traditional gender roles.
The state government offers scholarships and incentives for girls from marginalised communities. Girls who perform well academically are awarded the same. As a result, the gender gap has narrowed in recent years.
In rural areas, females grow up with limited knowledge about their rights and the importance of education in their lives. There is a gender disparity in workforce participation. Promoting girl’s education is a solution which will positively affect female workforce engagement.
