Brother MFC-L2690DW printer WiFi setup is simple once you know where the menu is. The printer’s standard interfaces include built-in wireless 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. You can join your network from the printer’s control panel Setup Wizard, with no computer needed for that step.
Write down your network details. Brother recommends noting your network name (SSID) and Network Key first. If you don’t know them, you cannot continue the wireless setup, and Brother’s Customer Service cannot help you find them. Check your router’s documentation, or ask your router manufacturer or Internet provider.
Check compatibility. Brother lists the wireless standard for infrastructure mode as IEEE 802.11b/g/n. Supported security includes WEP 64/128 bit, WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES), and WPA2-PSK (AES). If your router uses several WEP keys, the printer supports only the first one. Printer Tech Services suggests choosing the network name without “5G” if your router shows two names.
Expect a small screen. The LCD shows 16 characters across 2 lines, so enter your key carefully.
Brother’s Setup Wizard works like this:
Press Menu.
Use the arrow keys to select Network, then press OK.
Select WLAN, then press OK.
Select Setup Wizard, then press OK.
When WLAN Enable? appears, enable the wireless network. This starts the wizard.
When the list of SSIDs appears, select yours and press OK.
Enter your Network Key and press OK. Select Yes to apply the settings.
If the connection works, the screen shows “Connected”.
If your router supports WPS, the printer shows “WPS is available” after you pick your network. Accept it, and when “Press WPS on rtr” appears, press the WPS button on your router, then press the printer’s arrow key twice. Routers that support WPS carry a WPS symbol.
Some routers don’t broadcast their name. Brother’s guide has you select <New SSID> from the list instead.
To install the Full Driver & Software Package, insert the Brother installation disc, or go to your model’s Downloads page on the Brother Solutions Center at support.brother.com. After that, print a test page.
If the Printer Won’t Connect
The WLAN Report prints a diagnosis of your wireless connection. If the connection failed, Brother says to check the error code on the printed report against its Wireless LAN Report Error Codes table. Also check these:
Network Key. Retype it slowly. Printer Tech Services warns that a capital “I” and a lowercase “l” look almost the same.
Security type. Confirm your router uses one of the types Brother lists above. WPA2-PSK is listed with AES.
Router restart. Printer Tech Services suggests restarting the router, waiting two minutes, then trying again.
If your mobile device supports Wi-Fi Direct, press Menu, select Network, then Wi-Fi Direct, then Push Button. Enable Wi-Fi Direct when prompted, activate it on your device, and press OK on the printer. When the screen shows “Connected”, setup is done. Brother’s Mobile Print/Scan Guide for iPrint&Scan explains printing from your mobile device.
Wrapping Up
For Brother MFC-L2690DW printer WiFi setup, have your SSID and Network Key ready, then run Menu > Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard. Wait for “Connected”, install the software, and print a test page.
