The Principality
The principality of Pigeon island was established on february 3rd 2022 by prince Sylvester and princess Benedicte. The nation is ruled by two monarchs (diarchy) and has it’s own garrison. The total area of the territory is about 2,5 hectares.
The national day is the day the princes brought the flag to Pigeon island the first time, march 2nd 2022.
The government of Pigeon island wants to protect the rare plants growing on Pigeon island, stop the establishment of wind turbines on Pigeon island and honor the people who lived there before the island was devestated.
The Pigeon Island
Pigeon island is a part of a small artifical peninsula located in Hälsingland, Sweden. The former island is 255 meters wide and 155 meters from the northernmost to southernmost point. 'Duvön' is the swedish name of the island meaning 'The Pigeon Island'.
Likely around the late 1800s or early 1900s the first people started to build their houses on Pigeon island. We know there lived a shoemaker, a boatbuilder and a fisherman on the island.
Sometime during the 1960's Pigeon island was made into an artificial peninsula due to industrial activity. The people moved from the island and only the basements of the houses are left today. The northern part of the island was made into a gravelpit that was abandoned sometime between 2010 and 2020.
In recent years there has been discussions to build wind turbines on the now completely abandoned island, but that will likely not happen in the near future.
The most of the island is densely vegetated by sallow, spruce and birch etcetera. At and around the north border there only grows small trees. The southern coast is mostly covered in reed. In a study at pigeon island in 2007, many rare plants were found.
The temperature during January lies around -11 °C and 15 °C in July. It’s not possible to reach Pigeon island from land since the peninsula is closed off due to industrial activity in the area. You will have to go by boat or over the ice in the winter. Because of this, people rarely go there and the former island is therefore inhabited by many animals.
