"Mathematical Induction, so Simple and so Powerful"
Tuesday July 22nd, 6:00-7:00 PM, Pacific Time, online
Induction begins with one small step—and leads you to unexpected and wonderful places.
Imagine a staircase that goes on forever. If you can get onto the first step, and if you know how to get from any step to the next one, then you can reach as high as you like. This is the idea behind math induction: a magical method that lets you prove things for all numbers, starting with just one.
In this math-circle style lecture, we will explore how induction works and why it is one of the most powerful tools in a mathematician's toolkit.
Many induction problems that you find in math textbooks are complex and full of formulas - but don't worry. In this lecture, we will work with a set of problems that need no advanced knowledge. Just bring your curiosity, logic, love of clever ideas, and passion for problem solving.
Age range: we invite students grades 6-9 as of Fall 2025
These sessions are offered on a “pay what you can” basis. Join the lecture for free—or support Prime Factor with a donation of your choice.
