Wandering Words, a Lecture in Linguistics. Tuesday, September 9th, 6:45-7:45 PM
Languages are fascinating. They emerge seemingly on their own—no single person invents their grammar—yet they develop rigorous structures and well-defined rules. The science of lingiustics explore how sounds, words, and sentences are organized, how languages evolve over time, and how they influence one another.
Join us for the free linguistics lecture on Wandering Words.
Words are seldom unique to their language of origin. They wander from tongue to tongue, changing in pronunciation, meaning, and subtle connotations.
In this lecture we will discuss the why and the how of word borrowing. We will also solve several mind-stretching puzzles about wandering words, looking for patterns and gaining a deeper understanding of the language we speak. These puzzles also help prepare for linguistics competitions such as NACLO.
Age range: we invite students entering grades 8-10
