Every school is different, which means every Unified Champion School is different! While every Unified Champion School does at least one strategy per pillar, there are endless possibilities of how those are expressed at each school. Below are some examples:
At Special Olympics MA, we always say to start small! Inclusion is contagious and snowballs quickly - so start with picking one place to start per pillar and go from there. This is an example of a large school with Unified Sports teams that have fans in the stands, and Unified Recess. They have created a great Leadership Team to make sure that multiple people have a piece of the Unified Champion Schools pie.
This is an example of a diverse city school community. They have a "Free to be Me" club during lunch and recess that discusses kindness and exemplifies leadership. They also have a Unified PE class that uses some curriculum for Young Athletes. In the beginning, the school signed on to be a Unified Champion School and knew that no matter what I would take, they would make it work for their school.
This is an example of a school that has sub-separate classrooms that are very aware of when they are included or not. They capitalized on all of the supports and resources the Special Olympics offers, especially in the beginning of becoming a Unified Champion School. They have creative solutions to creating Unified Classrooms such as Inclusive Ukulele which got the buzz to start Unified Sports.
While this is a middle school, it is a great example of a Title 1 school that has grown from a school, to a Unified Champion School, to a National Banner School since this video was released. They created Unified PE, overcame the setbacks that COVID has had on their school, and changed the social makeup on their school community involving students in the entire school and getting support from the football team and beyond.
