One Institute-Funded PhD position is available in the PPD lab,
specifically for the study field of Cryo-Electron Microscopy and related computation and structural biology.
In addition to the above, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology will be
an integral part of the overall study field for solving the 3D structures of protein-protein/nucleic acid- protein/ macromolecular complexes like ribosome, virus, etc.,
to understand their action mechanisms.
Desirable qualifications:
Strong knowledge of Linux-based computation is necessary. The candidate should be able to install different programs in the GPU workstation, manage it, and run
different software in it for cryo-EM image processing and related 3D data analysis.
Also necessary is strong knowledge of computer programming languages, such as Python, C, C++, R, etc.
An excellent academic background from the research-minded and motivated candidates with an MSc/MS or equivalent degree in biophysics/physics/chemistry/biology is required over the minimum essential criterion mentioned below.
For institute-funded PhD positions, applicants must pass and possess at least one of the following qualifications: NEET-PG, INI-CET, CSIR-UGC NET JRF (Category II),
CSIR-UGC NET JRF (Category III), DBT-JRF (Category B), JGEEBILS, GATE, or an equivalent qualification.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria
Masters' (or B.E., B.Tech., M.Tech., MBBS, MVSc, MD) degree holders or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks) in any branch of science, including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.

In addition to the above,
Multiple PhD positions are available in our laboratory for independent fellowship holders.
Applicants with a background in life sciences/chemistry/physics/computational biology, having their own independent PhD fellowship, are encouraged to apply.
In our lab, students have the opportunity to work in both the wet and dry labs. Students are also encouraged to think and work independently to become future scientists or decision makers. Thus, we are interested in taking motivated students who have a strong interest in structural biology using cryo-EM, image processing, and computation, as well as have a strong interest in /biochemistry/molecular biology/microbiology related works. We have our own in-house cryo-EM image processing and computation setup and a standard wet lab facility.
There are a few important points you should know about us. At present, there are almost no chances of getting a hostel room on campus for PhD students. However, there are plenty of privately owned apartments/rooms available for rent within walking distance to the institute (just outside of the institute's main gate), where almost all the PhD students stay. By staying there, you may even save some money from your HRA as well. We have very good on-campus canteens that offer healthy food at reasonable prices. Ours is a very green, pollution-free, spacious campus with resort-like landscaping, with a plethora of student activity centers. Similar to the IITs and other IISERs, our fees are slightly higher than those of other research institutes and universities in the country. It's a Government mandate and not in our hands to change. In my opinion, though, the extra money you spend is worth it, because of using their many facilities and capitalizing on the brand value of these premier institutes of the country. However, be aware of criticism and misguiding persons. Don't get distracted by them.
Finally, if you are ready to apply, please contact "partha_datta@iiserkol.ac.in" with your full CV and an SOP. Simultaneously, check the IISER Kolkata application portal periodically.
