Conflict

What's the issue?

Day 1

1. REVIEW: Point of View & Theme

What do you remember about point of view? How about theme? I'm sure you know that point of view has something to do with the way a story is narrated, or that theme has something to do with the message of a story, but we're going to look a little closer at them today. Cut and glue your point of view (page 11) and theme (page 12) notebook sheets and review the terms as a class by watching the videos below. You can access the lyrics for POV here and theme here.

Day 2

1. INTRODUCE: Who is Ray Bradbury?

Before we start reading, let's get to know the author a little better. Science fiction is one of my favorite genres, and Bradbury is one of the most influential of his time. Let's learn a little more in this video.

2. DISCUSS: What Do You Think?

Before we go any further, I want to tell you a little story about a time I did something that I regret....

STOP! Now it's your turn. Have you ever done something you regret? Answer this question on your note card. I will give you an opportunity to discuss at your tables, and then we will discuss as a group.

3. PREVIEW: Preview the Text “All Summer in a Day”

Access "All Summer in a Day" in your textbook on page 288, or access it here. Turn to the story in your textbook and preview the text. Be sure to look at any bold heading, pictures, vocabulary words, or anything else that catches your eye. Complete the first page of your packet, EXCEPT for the "L" or Learn section in the box at the bottom.

STOP! Compare your notes with a partner. What did you both notice about the text? Compare your “k” and “w.” We will review as a class.

4. VOCABULARY: Defining the Terms

Turn to the second page in your “All Summer in a Day” Packet. As a class, we will define these terms. ONLY WRITE THE DEFINITION next to the word. DO NOT write a sentence….yet.

Day 3

1. READ AND PRACTICE: Read as a Class and Respond to Questions

We will read this story as a class (access audio version here), stopping to respond to the Questions for Thought along the way.

2. COMPLETE: Continue Working on "All Summer in a Day" Packet

Since we have completed the Questions for thought, we now need to complete the What I LEARNED box, Vocabulary, Literary Focus, and Critical Thinking sections. If you finish early, go to this page for more practice on identifying Point of View. Be sure to email your results to ghanertr@pwcs.edu.

Day 4

1. WARM-UP

IDENTIFY: Theme and Point of View in "All Summer in a Day"

Think back to our discussion about theme. You have a Theme Diagram worksheet. You will complete this sheet as your warm-up, which means it needs to be done independently. Once you are finished, you may being working on the next step.

2. COMPLETE: Finish “All Summer in a Day” Packet

Once we finish reviewing the warm-up return to your packets and complete the What I LEARNED box, Vocabulary, Literary Focus, and Critical Thinking sections. Turn it in when you are done. If you finish early, go to this page for more practice on identifying point of view. Be sure to email your results to ghanertr@pwcs.edu.

For more practice with theme, go here https://www.ereadingworksheets.com/reading-worksheets/theme-worksheet-3.htm. Copy your answers down onto another sheet of paper.

“The Treasure of Lemon Brown:”

Figurative Language and Mood & Tone

Ask Ms. Ghaner for the packet if you would like additional practice to identify fictional elements.
