DISCOVERING MÁLAGA

HISTORY OF MALAGA

The influence of other cultures, due to the occupation of towns such as the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and for centuries the Muslims, expelled by the Christians in the time of the Catholic Monarchs, have given Malaga a wealth of monuments and culture, which we can still enjoy in its cobbled streets of the historic center, the many buildings, monuments and even in its markets, some preserving the Muslim architecture.

Although Malaga is one of the biggest cities in Spain, especially because it has a very extensive province, if you want to visit the most famous monuments in Malaga city, you will find it very easy, because most of them are located in the historic center, and you can make a route through each one of them on foot, so you can get lost in its streets, and see the atmosphere that this city has throughout the year.

Malaga is a modern and cosmopolitan city, you can see many ancient monuments, integrated in the same old town, mostly thanks to the pedestrianization of the historic center that allows you to walk in front of the cathedral without any noise, or take a typical dish of the area while watching the ruins of the Roman theater and the Alcazaba. You can also enjoy other plans, if you want to get away from the center for a day, I recommend you visit the botanic garden (Jardín Botánico de la Concepción), a spectacular place where you will find plants from different parts of the world. Here we tell you some of the most important monuments to visit in Málaga:

-       Gibralfaro Castle

-       The Alcazaba and Roman Theatre

-       The Cathedral (aka. “La Manquita”)

MUSICAL ACTIVITY IN MÁLAGA

Philharmonic Orchestra Málaga (OFM)

Philharmonic Orchestra Málaga gave its inaugural concert on 14th February 1991. It was born then as the Orquesta Ciudad de Málaga, a consortium between the City Council of Málaga and Junta de Andalucía, and which responded to the conviction that a city like Málaga should have a great symphonic orchestra.

At the head of the Orchestra and its project, six conductors have imprinted their own personality: Octav Calleya, Odón Alonso, Alexander Rahbari, Aldo Ceccato, Edmon Colomer and Manuel Hernández Silva.

José María Moreno is currently the principal conductor and artistic director of the orchestra.

Philharmonic Orchestra Málaga has believed that it is essential not to limit its activity to the subscription seasonal programme and has deployed enthusiastic parallel proposals. Along with CD recordings of very diverse repertoires, and with different conductors, we must add two Cycles of Chamber Music, its cycle La Filarmónica Frente al Mar, especially designed for new audiences and young people of special artistic projection, and the Joven Orquesta Barroca de Andalucía (JOBA) which was born in 2010 as a pedagogical project.

SGAE awarded the Orchestra a special prize in 2007, in recognition of its work in favour of contemporary Spanish music.

In 2017, the Provincial Council of Málaga awarded the OFM the Distinction of Honour of the Province for its cultural and social development in the province.

The Junta de Andalucía has awarded it the Andalusian Flag of the Arts 2021.

Málaga Symphony Orchestra

Málaga Symphony Orchestra is a Spanish orchestra based at the cultural center María Victoria Atencia, located in Calle Ollerías, in the Centre of Málaga, Spain.

Founded in 1945 by D. Pedro Gutierrez Lapuente, it is one of the oldest orchestras in Spain. Its main objectives are the diffusion of music and the support to the formation of new artistic values.

Coinciding with its 50th anniversary, the Málaga Provincial Council decided to support the Symphony Orchestra of Malaga in a committed and enthusiastic way, since then performing more than 600 concerts throughout the province under its patronage.

Málaga Symphony Orchestra has given countless concerts in its history, with the participation of renowned soloists such as: Gaspar Cassadó, Henryk Szeryng, José Cubiles, Alfredo Kraus, Montserrat Caballé, Ainhoa Arteta, Dwayne Croft, Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov and Andrea Bocelli; and conductors such as: Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Michael Thomas, Miquel Ortega, Francisco de Gálvez, José Luis Temes, Marco de Prosperis, Carlo Bernini and Marco Boemi.

Its activity has focused mainly on the classical repertoire, although its current artistic offer includes symphonic flamenco with concerts given with artists such as Estrella Morente, Vicente Amigo, David Dorantes and Manolo Sanlúcar; pop with singers such as Laura Pausini and Vanesa Martín; jazz with its occasional collaboration in the Malaga Jazz Festival; and film music with its annual participation in the Malaga Fantastic Film Festival (FANCINE) and in the International Film Music Festival Movie Score Malaga (MOSMA).

Soho Theatre Orchestra

This is the resident orchestra of Teatro del Soho for all its own productions such as the musical starring Antonio Banderas called ‘Company’ as well as the concerts it offers.

It was created in 2021 by Antonio Banderas, who is the artistic director of the project, and has Arturo Díez Boscovich as musical conductor.

This orchestra is not a conventional formation. In contrast to traditional classical symphony orchestras, it proposes the fun and enjoyment of making music with an eclectic and vibrant repertoire, ranging from the classical works best known to the general public to Broadway music, film music, or the Beatles.

Municipal Music Band

Municipal Music Band of Málaga is one of the oldest in Spain. Its main purpose being to disseminate and bring music closer to the citizens and to contribute to its teaching.

Municipal Band carries out active work throughout the year, mainly with its concerts season, in which it performs an extensive repertoire, especially focusing on Spanish music. Furthermore, it offers concerts for the districts and citizens' associations, and concerts for schoolchildren visiting schools and institutes.

Its presence has been required in other areas. Its collaborations with the O.C.M. in 1994 (extraordinary end-of-year concert dedicated to maestro Barbieri, conducted by Odón Alonso) and 1999 (Tchaikowsky's 1812 Overture, conducted by Enrique García Asensio) are worth mentioning. It has made recordings for Canal Sur Radio and Radio Clásica of R.N.E., as well as a CD of processional marches published by the Town Hall of Málaga in 1999 and another, with the title "Nuestra Lírica", of great pages of Spanish zarzuela and opera in 2001.

Francisco Hernández is the promoter of its creation, and great musicians as Francisco Soler, Isidro Belmonte, Antonio Palanca, Perfecto Artola, Salvador García Sánchez and Antonio Sánchez Pérez have also been conductors of the band.
