Presentation

This section of my project will focus on how I can present and publish my work in the future. It will include research into publishing options, information about my target audience, where I could share or publish my work, and ideas for overall presentation. I’ll also include my future goals and a draft cover letter, as if I were actually preparing to submit my magazine for publication. Throughout this section, I’ll explain why each part is important and how it contributes to the final outcome of my project.

Revisiting Research

To kickstart my presentation page, I decided to look back at some previous research that I conducted earlier in my project in regards to production and how to publish a magazine. I decided that this previous research would be beneficial to include in my presentation section and revisit, as it provides a strong foundation for understanding the practical steps required to take my magazine from concept to reality and how I would present it. By revisiting this research, I was able to reflect on the different publishing routes available, and begin shaping a clear and realistic plan for how I want to share my final piece with a wider audience.

Publishing and Producing a Magazine

In this section, I have explored the professional processes involved in producing and publishing a magazine. By understanding how real life publications manage everything from planning and editing to design and distribution, it helps me to build a clearer picture of what it takes to bring a magazine to life. By researching industry workflows and examples from established magazines, I can apply professional methods to my own FMP. This research also supports the practical side of my work and gives me a better understanding of the roles, timelines, and standards expected in editorial production.

To begin, I looked at several online articles and guides written by industry professionals. These resources break down key stages like planning, editing, publishing, and distribution. They give me insight into how actual publishing companies work and what steps are needed to create a successful magazine. This helps me apply professional methods to my own project and improves the quality of my final outcome.

'The Magazine Production Company'

This article by Dean Cook explains the general steps involved in producing a magazine, including planning, editorial contribution, advertising, sales, and production. It highlights how all departments must work together on a clear timeline to keep costs low and ensure quality. I found it especially helpful for understanding the behind-the-scenes coordination needed in professional publishing.

Planning is Crucial: Effective planning ensures that editorial contributors, advertising sales, and production artists can deliver their parts on time, maintaining smooth operations and minimizing costs.

Overall, this article emphasises the importance of coordination among different teams to meet deadlines and produce a cohesive magazine, as well as highlighting that in-depth planning is essential to avoid delays and additional costs.

'Blurb Blog'

This guide focuses on the self-publishing route. It covers everything from choosing your content and layout software to printing and selling your magazine. It’s useful for writers who want to take full control of their work and publish independently, which is helpful for my FMP since I’m managing the project myself.

Page Counts: Ensure total pages are divisible by four for proper binding.
Spine Design: Avoid text on the spine; use images or solid colours instead.
Cover Design: Invest in a compelling cover with high-impact visuals and concise headlines.
Layout Considerations: Design across spreads, not just individual pages, and maintain adequate margins.

To summarise, this article guide encourages thinking of magazines as versatile tools for storytelling and showcasing work. It also provides practical advice on design elements to enhance reader engagement and aesthetic appeal.

Who, What, When, Where, Why and How? - Research

For my next section, I decided to research a range of platforms, such as online publishing sites, competitions, and independent publishers, that could offer me a chance to present, distribute, or even formally publish my magazine. Each option comes with its own pros and cons, but they all open up new possibilities for getting my work seen.

Issuu is an online platform that allows users to upload and digitally publish magazines, zines, and creative portfolios. I was drawn to it because it’s user-friendly, and I’ve seen other students use it successfully to share their work. It allows for high-quality visual presentation and has features like page-flipping animations, which could really enhance the look and feel of my fashion magazine. It also gives me the option to embed the magazine on websites or blogs, which could help me share it more widely.

MagCloud is another online self-publishing tool that focuses specifically on magazines and printed media. What’s interesting about this site is that it allows readers to purchase physical copies as well as digital ones. This could be ideal if I ever wanted to distribute hard copies at events or exhibitions. MagCloud also offers templates, which could help if I wanted to develop future issues or change the format slightly.

Stack Magazines (Independent Magazine Network) - Stack independent magazine subscription

Stack is a service that curates and delivers independent magazines to subscribers. Although getting featured on Stack would be more selective and competitive, I think it’s worth looking into. If my magazine fits their niche, which includes fashion, culture, and independent voices, it could be a way to connect with a very specific and engaged readership. I plan to look at how past magazines got selected and whether mine would stand out.

Even though this is mostly a writing competition, Creative Future has different strands and categories, including zines and hybrid creative forms. I could potentially submit an excerpt from my articles or a concept piece that represents the heart of my magazine. It’s also aimed at underrepresented creatives, which makes me feel encouraged to try.

Not Just a Label (NJAL) - NOT JUST A LABEL

This is a global platform for emerging fashion creatives, mainly designers, but also fashion writers and stylists. They host digital portfolios and allow members to submit editorial content. Although it’s more fashion-industry focused, I think there could be space for me to share my magazine, especially the parts that discuss fashion trends, identity, and shock fashion. Being on a platform like this could give my magazine a more professional audience.

I also researched local zine fairs and indie publishing events like the DIY Art Market in London or local artist markets. These events are great places to present print copies of creative projects. Even if I just attend to network, it would help me understand the kinds of formats and content that resonate with people who love independent publishing.

Social Media (Instagram & TikTok)

While these aren’t formal publishing spaces, they are crucial for visibility. Instagram, especially, is widely used to share visuals from zines and magazines. I could post spreads, behind-the-scenes videos of the creation process, or even host a digital launch. TikTok could also help me explain my themes in short, engaging clips, especially the more conceptual parts like shock fashion and identity.

Exploring these platforms and spaces has given me a clearer picture of where I could take this project next. Whether I choose a digital release, submit to a publisher, or physically share it at a zine fair, I feel more confident now that my magazine has a life beyond just this final submission.

My Plans

As my Final Major Project nears completion, I’ve started thinking more seriously about how I want to present and share my work beyond just the classroom. Since this project is designed to reflect both my creative vision and my ability to produce a professional-standard magazine, it’s important that the final presentation is just as carefully considered as the content itself. I want the project to feel finished, accessible, and reflective of the fashion-forward, youth-focused audience I had in mind throughout development. Below I have outlined my current ideas for presenting the magazine to a wider audience, as well as future opportunities I’m hoping to explore.

This project has given me a much clearer idea of how I’d want to share my work professionally, and even if I don’t get to publish it right away, I’ve started building a path toward real audiences.

Cover Letter Draft

As part of developing my magazine for a wider audience, I considered how I might present it professionally to a real-world publisher. Below is a draft of a cover letter I would send to a potential publishing company. This letter highlights the unique identity of my magazine, reflects on my creative process, and expresses my interest in seeing the project reach a larger platform. While I faced challenges, such as like sourcing relevant visuals and clarifying article hooks, I’ve grown confident in my ability to edit, reflect, and respond to feedback.
