This page displays the skills, process and knowledge that I have obtained and demonstrated throughout the production of my project. It includes my article/journalistic writing skills, software skills such as InDesign and how I have developed these and applied them to my final product.
Writing Skills
Throughout the writing process for my magazine, I developed and applied a wide range of writing skills, each tailored to the subject and tone of the article I was creating. Across my six articles, I became more confident in adapting my voice, structuring content effectively, and engaging readers through purposeful language choices.
Across all six articles, I also developed my editing and proofreading skills. I became better at cutting down repetition, tightening ideas, and ensuring each paragraph had a clear purpose. I also practiced using headlines, subheadings, and openers more effectively to hook the reader and guide them through the piece. Overall, this project allowed me to build a strong foundation in feature article writing, helping me understand how form, tone, and audience shape every creative decision I make.
InDesign Skills
Before I began finalising the layout and visual style of my magazine, I wanted to do some additional research into editorial design and layout principles, specifically on InDesign. I’m doing this to ensure I set myself up to achieve the most professional and visually impactful results possible for my final magazine.
Firstly, I watched the YouTube video titled “Five magazine layout tips and tricks in Adobe InDesign”, which provided practical information into enhancing magazine layouts using Adobe InDesign. Below are some notes of the key takeaways i got from watching this video and how they contributed to the development of my practical skills for my project.
Utilizing Grids and Guides: The video emphasised the importance of setting up grids and guides to maintain consistency and alignment throughout the magazine layout.
Master Pages for Efficiency: Implementing master pages allows for the application of consistent elements (like headers and footers) across multiple pages, streamlining the design process.
Paragraph and Character Styles: Creating and applying paragraph and character styles ensures uniform typography, making global changes more manageable.
Effective Use of White Space: The tutorial highlighted how strategic use of white space can enhance readability and aesthetic appeal.
Image Placement and Wrapping: Techniques for placing images and wrapping text around them were demonstrated, adding visual interest to the layout.
This tutorial significantly improved my proficiency with Adobe InDesign, directly impacting the quality of my magazine project. By applying grids and guides, I achieved a more organised and professional-looking layout. Utilising master pages saved time and ensured consistency across pages. The use of paragraph and character styles helped with the the typography, allowing for more cohesive text formatting. Understanding the importance of white space helped me create a cleaner design that enhances reader engagement. Lastly, mastering image placement and text wrapping techniques added visual dynamism to my magazine pages.
I also watched another online YouTube video, called “Learn Adobe InDesign in 11 MINUTES!” by LYH Studio, I found it to be another helpful and informative resource that significantly helped to enhance and improve my practical design skills for my project. Below are some more notes of the key takeaways I got from watching this video and how they contributed to the development of my practical skills for my project.
Understanding the InDesign Interface
The video begins with an overview of the InDesign workspace, including the tools panel, control panel, and document window. This foundational knowledge helped me navigate the software more efficiently.
Creating and Setting Up a New Document
The video demonstrates how to create a new document, set margins, columns, and bleed areas. This step is crucial for setting up a professional looking magazine layout.
Working with Text Frames
The tutorial covers how to create and manipulate text frames, including linking multiple frames and adjusting text flow. This skill is essential for managing large bodies of text in magazine articles.
Placing and Fitting Images
The video also explains how to place images into the document and use fitting options to ensure they display correctly within frames. This technique is very important for integrating visuals seamlessly into the layout.
This tutorial significantly improved my proficiency with Adobe InDesign, which again helped shape the quality of my magazine project. By understanding the interface, I navigated the software more confidently. Setting up the document correctly ensured a solid foundation for my layout. Working with text frames allowed me to manage articles effectively, while mastering image placement enhanced the visual appeal of my pages. Applying paragraph and character styles ensured the typography had consistency, giving my magazine a more professional look.
Revisiting Software Skills
This section showcases the practical software skills I’ve developed and revisited throughout the project. As part of my preparation for creating my own magazine cover and layout, I took time to re-familiarise myself with key tools in Adobe InDesign. I did this by looking back at my pervious work done in college, specifically during Unit 9 and 10. This included learning how to use layers, text frames, selection tools, and shape creation. I also practiced replicating a real magazine cover to apply these tools in context, which helped me understand how design principles are applied professionally. Revisiting these core techniques has been really valuable in building my confidence and efficiency when designing my own creative work.
Here, I have created a replica of an existing magazine cover, using a range of tools on InDesign, such as the selection button, frame fitting, adding text and creating layers. These are all vital skills that I will use when creating my magazine cover, which is why I found looking back at my previous work using this software very helpful - it reminded me of the basic tools I will need and how to put them into practice .
After looking back at some pervious skills as a guide, I decided to have a practice/play around on Adobe Illustrator. I will most likely be using Illustrator as a tool for creating complex shapes for my magazine that are not possible to do on InDesign, especially creating my own graphics for the front cover. Here, I have looked back at some skills that I learned for my Unit 9 and 10 Children's resource project, and played around with tools such as 'Radial', Colours and patterns, 'Objects' and the 'Shape Builder' tool. This led me to create a vase design with flowers, as seen below.
In my magazine, I feel as if I have demonstrated and developed a range of practical skills within my visual design. Below I have noted some of these key skills that I have implemented within my design:
Layout Design & Page Composition
I have used layout skills to organise text and images in a visually appealing way. For example, I have balanced columns, used grids, and structured articles to flow smoothly across pages, ensuring the content was readable and well-spaced.
Typography
I have chosen and paired fonts appropriately within my design, such as using bold headings, subheadings, and body text with clear font hierarchy to guide the reader’s attention and make the magazine easy to read.
Visual Communication
I have selected images, illustrations, and graphics that enhanced the articles and helped visually tell the story. For instance, I have included photos of traditional garments in the Traditional Dress article which helped strengthen its message.
Colour Theory
I have applied applied colour theory to create a cohesive aesthetic - for example, I have used a more muted palette for the feature on fashion and economics that helps to reinforce the themes, while brighter tones in the Japanese Fashion article reflect its playful, expressive tone.
Software Skills
I have also used design software like Adobe InDesign and Canva to create layouts, edit photos, and format my magazine. This includes practical tasks like cropping images, adjusting alignment, and exporting my final product for print and digital use.
Branding & Visual Consistency
I feel as if I have maintained a consistent visual identity throughout by using the same colour scheme, header styles, and spacing between articles. This skill is important in creating a professional and unified magazine look.
