In Part 3, we begin by theorizing immigration-- why do people get up and move at all? Where do they move to? From there, we look more closely at theories of assimilation. People do not wake up one day and say, "Today, we assimilate!" Yet, that clearly happens in many societies. What does assimilation mean? How does it happen? We also return to considerations raised at the beginning of this course; how do immigration movements impact our understandings of citizenship and belonging and the state? The answers to such questions help us better understand immigrants' experiences as well as peoples reactions to immigration.
Finally, in this section we look more closely to some of the major debates about immigration- what is the impact of immigrants and immigration on the economy? What civil, political, and social rights do immigrants have in the US? What such rights, if any, also extend to "undocumented" immigrants?
