Part II of this course provides an overview of immigration history in the United States. While immigrants came from nearly all countries, this section focuses on the largest immigrant groups including the Irish, Germans, Italians, and Eastern European Jews. In addition to these large groups, we also include early Chinese and Mexican immigration to the US since they increasingly make up an important and significant percentage of modern immigration to the US.
As we look at these groups, we ask question such as why did previous waves of people come to the US? How were they received by native-born Americans? Examining the commonalities and differences across their experiences will help begin to formulate an theory of why people move and the general immigrant experience.
