ABOUT ME
ANDY STEVENSON MA
BA(Hons) | MA(Dist.) | PG DIP Seda | PG Cert Research Methods | p/t PhD Student | Member of the British Cartographic Society
Background
I am a Senior Design Lecturer at the University of Worcester and the founder of Point2 Guides, where I create award-winning maps and recreational walking guides. My expertise spans mapping, illustration, walking guide design and development.
I have led the design and implementation of successful active travel initiatives for organizations including VisitShropshire, Malvern Hills District Council, and Worcestershire Community Rail Partnership, working in conjunction with West Midlands Trains and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).
My work has received national recognition, featuring on BBC Countryfile, in the British Cartographic Society's 'Maplines' magazine, and at the House of Commons in London.
My commercial portfolio encompasses publishing (including reference works and children's literature), digital mapping, web development (UX/UI), multimedia production, and advertising. I integrate this professional experience into my teaching through 'live' student design briefs.
Academic Experience
With over two decades of university-level teaching experience, I have pioneered 'live' student projects in heritage interpretation and wayfinding design for prestigious organizations including the National Trust, English Heritage, and Great Malvern. I have also collaborated with the National Archives' education team to develop resources for visiting educators and groups.
My teaching portfolio includes information graphics, wayfinding and interpretation design, web and multimedia design, and children's publishing. I established the University of Worcester's first curriculum in sustainable graphic design at the degree level, overseeing successful student collaborations with environmental organizations including Friends of the Earth, Transition Worcester, regional wildlife trusts, and The Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales.
I was nominated for the 2020 University of Worcester's Deputy Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching as "the Student's Choice."
Publishing Achievements
I have developed cartographic solutions for major publishers including Penguin Viking, Macmillan, Dorling Kindersley, Facts on File USA, The History Press, and The Erskine Press. Notable projects include mapping for two books documenting the classified WW2 Operation Tabarin.
Recognition
My 'A Worcester Emotimap' interactive mapping project contributed to two significant achievements: the Worcester City Council Landscape Architect's successful bid for the 2010 MJ Achievement Award for Sustainable Infrastructure Achievement of the Year, and securing National Lottery funding for the River Severn city centre redevelopment project.
