The exhibition, ‘Play and Gender Expression’ showcases critical design artifacts to generate awareness regarding the problem of gender differences that can be actuated at the very beginning of life, with children and one of the most prominent objects of play, such as toys. It is directed towards the general public in a Portuguese academic setting.
The complexity of gender inequality can be considered a wicked problem because of its multidimensional nature, which is largely affected by various agents within a culture-specific environment. To address the issue holistically, the exhibition attempts to explore diverse areas of sociocultural factors, including education, political background, economic issues, religious perspective, fundamental rights, social duties, sexual expressions, and cultural belief systems. At the same time, it includes a vast range of mediums such as physical and digital products, interactive installations, t-shirts, and photographs to initiate open discussions and provocations among the viewers.

The exhibition aims to stimulate the viewers with daily life actions and decisions, which can sometimes lead to conscious or unconscious gender dichotomy and record their knowledge and perception through an innovative qualitative data collection method. In contemporary times, the applications of design speculation and critical approaches are mostly limited to the forms of art exhibitions, displays, installations and other mediums of visual communication. The exhibition is an attempt at conceptual design that can be effectively implemented and translated in the form of tacit knowledge. For the same purpose, the exhibition is decided to be autonomous and self-instructed without any help from mentors within an adequate time limit.
