PIECHS Director of Bands/Fine Arts Supervisor/Brass Specialist
Mr. Alejandro Cavazos is in his 16th year of teaching and 3rd year as the Director of Instrumental Music at Point Isabel ISD and Head Director for Port Isabel Early College High School. He oversees all the Fine Arts programs at Point Isabel ISD, the Silver Tarpon Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Trombone studio at the high school. He also teaches beginner trombone and euphonium at Port Isabel Junior High.
Mr. Cavazos received his Bachelor of Music Education in 2010 from Texas A&M University – Kingsville where he graduated Cum Laude and studied trombone under Dr. Paul Hageman and Dr. Oscar Diaz. While studying at TAMUK, he performed with the Wind Symphony, Jazz Band I, and the Trombone Choir, all of whom were invited ensembles to various music conferences such as Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and Eastern Trombone Workshop. He also marched with The Cavaliers’ Drum and Bugle Corp in 2007 and served on the brass staff with Genesis Drum and Bugle Corp for several years.
His career started off at Harlingen CISD at Harlingen South High School in 2010. While at Harlingen South, he contributed to the marching band where they made the Texas State Marching Contest in 2012 and had TMEA All-State musicians in classical and jazz. When Mr. Cavazos arrived at Donna High School in 2014, he helped the program reach the Texas State Marching Contest the following year in 2015. During his four years at Donna, he received UIL sweepstakes with the Concert and Honors band. He also had multiple students make the TMEA All-Region Band. Mr. Cavazos was last at Harlingen High School as an assistant director. They have made appearances at the Texas State Marching Contest in 2018 and 2020 and have had successful ensembles participate through UIL Concert and Sightreading. He has had multiple TMEA All-Region students, a TMEA All-State trombonist, and assisted with the Honors jazz band who made appearances at the Midwest Clinic in 2021 and the Texas Music Educators Association in 2022.
Mr. Cavazos has stayed an active performer within the Rio Grande Valley playing in several musicals and brass ensembles. He is currently the lead trombonist for the Rio Grande Valley Jazz Orchestra who have performed at The Midwest Clinic, TBA, and TMEA. Over the years, he has had the honor and privilege of premiering music written by Gabe Musella at the Texas Bandmasters Association and played alongside professionals such as Andre Hayward, Wycliff Gordon, Ken Ebo, Terell Stafford, and Wayne Bergeron to name a few. He is happily married to his wife, Giselle Cavazos, of 13 years and has a 12 year-old son named Alex, a 10 year-old daughter named Emma, and a 4 year old son named Ezra.
PIJH Head Band Director/Flute/Woodwind Specialist
Giselle Cavazos received a bachelor's degree in music education from Texas A & M University at Kingsville in 2009, where she studied Flute pedagogy under the tutelage of Dr. Seidman, Dr. Gill and Dr. Dunavent. She currently teaches Flute, but in the past has taught all woodwind instrument.
Her teaching career started in the fall of 2010 at Donna ISD, where she taught flute, double reeds, and conducted the Non-Varsity Band at W.A. Todd Middle school and received UIL Superior ratings under her direction.
Mrs. Cavazos is currently the head director of Port Isabel Junior High and conductor of the Honor Band. She has consistently earned Division 1 Sweepstakes awards at UIL Evaluations and Pre- UIL Contests. She has been a member of the Texas Music Educators Association since 2006, Texas Band Masters Association since 2019, and recently became a Provisional Texas Music Adjudicators Association Member.
Mrs. Cavazos has had many students consistently audition and earn a chair in the Regions 28 Association Texas Small School Middle School and All State High School Band, and Texas Music Educators Association Middle School and All State High School Band. She has had students earn the highest level of musical achievement and make the Texas Music Educators Association All State 5A Band.
Mrs. Cavazos currently resides in Harlingen, Texas with her husband Alejandro, and three children Alex (11), Emma (9), Ezra (3).
PIECHS Assistant Band Director/ Low Brass Specialist
Jose Cruz is the Symphonic band director/tuba-euphonium director at Port Isabel. He has been working in Port Isabel for four years. During those years, his groups and students have earned numerous accolades and superior ratings (such as All-state placements in ATSSB 4A and TMEA 6A ensembles, UIL Sweepstakes and UIL State Solo and Ensemble participants). In addition to the HS, Mr. Cruz also teaches at the Junior High, where he teaches French Horn and Tuba.
Mr. Cruz graduated from the University of Texas- Rio Grande Valley in 2022, earning his bachelor's in music education (under tutelage of Dr. William Haugeberg). Mr. Cruz currently resides in Brownsville with his extremely supportive wife, Bianay, and one year-old, Alaia. During his free time, Mr. Cruz enjoys spending time with his family and watching sports.

Dr. de la Rosa is entering his 2nd year as the Assistant Band Director for the Port ISabel Bands. He is the high brass specialist teaching. He teaches beginner trumpets, facilitates the bands within the program, and teaches a Dual-enrollment Music Appreciation class (in collaboration with Texas Southmost College, TSC). Before working at Port Isabel, Dr. de la Rosa taught within Dallas, Tyler, and previously Point Isabel ISD. Prior to his public-school teaching, he taught private trumpet lessons and masterclasses to Wylie High School’s That Wylie Band (along with their feeding pattern).
During his performance tenure, Dr. de la Rosa was fortunate to have been a semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition and the Young Texas Artists Competitions. While at Eastern Illinois University, he won the university’s Concerto Competition performing the Tomasi Trumpet Concerto. Prior performance experiences also include playing trumpet for the Blue Suede Crew, University of Illinois Graduate Brass Quintet, and being principal trumpet for the Urbana Pops Orchestra.
Dr. de la Rosa is a native of Harlingen, Tx. He attended Harlingen High School- South, where he was guided to be awarded the Outstanding Soloist Award by Wiff Rudd (Baylor University). Dr. de la Rosa has one energetic son, Theo, a future drummer. His loving wife, Jenny, also played clarinet. The family is complete with 1 dogs, May and 2 cats, Cheddar and Baby Jack.

With a decade of experience shaping young musicians, Ms. Pena serves as a dedicated conductor and educator committed to musical excellence. Currently the Assistant Band director at Port Isabel Jr High, Ms. Pena combines a high-energy conducting style with a deep pedagogical foundation in woodwind performance.

She has led the sub non-varsity bands to achieve a 1 on stage each time she took them to UIL Contest.

PIECHS Assistant Band Director/ Percussion Specialist
Ramon Perez is originally from Rio Grande City, Texas. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in music performance from Texas A&M University–Kingsville under the direction of Randy Fluman, and Dr. Ben Tomlinson. During his graduate studies, he served as a graduate teaching assistant and was the principal percussionist of the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Perez teaches 6th through 12th grade percussion at Point Isabel ISD. This is his first year in education, and he is eager to begin his teaching career and contribute to the musical growth of his students.
PIJH Assistant Band Director/ Clarinet Specialist
Mrs. Veronica Salinas serves as the Assistant Band Director at Port Isabel Junior High. She teaches junior high and high school clarinet and oboe students, assists with the Junior High Symphonic Band, and directs the Silver Line Color Guard. Mrs. Salinas earned her Bachelor of Music from Texas A&M University–Kingsville, where she performed as principal oboe in both the Wind Ensemble and the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra. She also performed with Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps and ATX Winterguard as a flagline member.
Mrs. Salinas began her teaching career in Northeast Texas before moving to the Rio Grande Valley. She previously served as Assistant Band Director and Color Guard Director in Edinburg CISD, where she helped lead the Edinburg North High School Marching Band back to the 6A State Marching Competition in 2021. Under her leadership, the Edinburg North Color Guard qualified for the TCGC State Winter Guard Competition twice. She later taught at MacArthur High School in San Antonio, where she conducted the Non-Varsity Band and served as color guard liaison.
Mrs. Salinas has extensive experience in the marching arts and served on the visual and color guard staff for Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps from 2017–2023, working with visual training and choreography. She continues to write band and color guard choreography for programs across Texas.
Mrs. Salinas is passionate about helping students grow both musically and personally and believes that every student can find their place in band or color guard. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son and trying new foods.
