The Antique province which homes most of the Karay-a is situated in the western section of the Panay Island. Antique is renowned for its vibrant community. rich cultural heritage, and natural beauty.
The Karay-a is derived from iraya meaning “upstream,” ka, meaning “companion,” with infixation in, meaning “to have undergone something.”. Karay-a refers to the ethnolinguistic group predominantly located on Panay island in Western Visayas. Chroniclers of the Spanish colonial period refer to them as the “Araya.”
The Karay-a people are very skilled in craftsmanship, as they both craft and use boats and baskets to efficiently fish for their food.
They not only practice fishing but also agriculture. The Antique Rice Terraces serves as a testament for the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the ancestors of the indigenous people living there.
The language that the Karay-a people use is variously called Kinaray-a, Kinaray-a Bukidnon, or Hiniraya, which possibly derives from Iraya.
