PIChE Batangas Chapter conducted its first Exposure Trip for this year 2019 at the First Philippine Industrial Park, Sto. Tomas Batangas. This event catered both the professionals (registered chemical engineers, chemical engineering practitioners or graduates) and students with the aim of bridging the gap of the academe and industry sectors in pursuit of the integrated learning method. It was attended by 11 professionals from different companies like P&G, Bauer International, South Luzon Power, Avestronics, Zama Precision and Batangas State University. In addition, five chemical engineering and ten food engineering students taking up Field Trips and Seminars also participated in the said event.
The event was started with a prayer by one of the students, Glecile Fiestada. Then, Ms. Essi Cruzat, one of the chapter's own, provided the participants the information regarding the First Philippine Industrial Park. Additional plant insights were given by Engr. Christine Joy Sarmiento. It also tackled the different establishments inside the park and the maintenance of the whole industrial sector. The team proceeded with the brief technical discussion led by Engr. Nelson P. Lontok of the wastewater facility in Sto. Tomas, Batangas accommodating the different locators inside FPIP. This discussion also included the process flow as well as design aspects that made the facilities efficient in dealing with domestic and industrial wastes from different companies.
Actual exposure trip started at around 10:30 AM where the main process area was visited. The participants were able to actually witness the aeration process, clarifying process, and other core operations. Students and professionals were also able to ask questions and Mr. Lontok of the FPIP Team was able to provide them information that were very handy in their studies and/or researches. By the end of the process area visit, the participants were also able to access the laboratory with the team accommodating all questions regarding the problems encountered in the past and future plans.
After visiting the process area, an extra activity was added where participants toured the whole FPIP area. From FPIP 1 to FPIP 2, the participants were amazed with all the companies inside of the industrial sector, proving its claim that it is one of the fastest growing industrial parks in the region. After the whole round trip, the participants were gathered again in the conference room for the awarding of certificate of appreciation to the FPIP team, sponsored by the local chapter.
Meanwhile, it was also an avenue for companies like Bauer and Avestronics to pool client from a sector operating for many years and continually eyeing for technical improvements. Hence, this activity has paved the way in connecting the industrial sector of Batangas to the chapter itself as well as the academe sector. Both parties hope for broadening and expanding these bonds by tying up for more activities in the future.
Update: As of July 2, 2019, online form is no longer accepting responses since the contest is over.
PIChE Batangas Chapter spearheads its organizational contest this June 22, 2019 to aesthetically promote the chapter's identity with other chapter. The deadline of submission is on June 30, 2019 and the winner will gain a 50% discount in the upcoming CPD Seminar and 20.0 membership points. Upon selection, this will be the official attire of the officers and members during activities.
The contest utilizes the templates as uploaded in the google drive of the chapter. Each participant shall download and use them to design the shirt and must be guided by the rules and mechanics. Failure to do so may result in disqualification of the entry. All participants will automatically gain 5.0 membership points that will accumulate at the end of the fiscal year for the selection of the most outstanding member of the chapter.
PIChE Batangas Chapter officially opens its database for members and other engineers or graduate who are interested in the benefits of becoming an active member. Starting this January 20, 2019, the members can now renew their membership, access their own files, view their membership status and comment for improvements through the database. This is the first of the many big projects of the organization.
This database will be updated from time to time especially when members renew or update their data. Information stored in our database are strictly confidential and for the use of the members only. If a member asks for data about other members, the chapter shall inform the member prior to the discretion of data.
With the endeavor to continually increase the number of members, PIChE Batangas Chapter launches its Featured Member program this June 2019. The program aims to advertise and highlight the most active member for each activity organized by the chapter. Engr. Diana Campang and Engr. Mary Rose Semilla are the featured members for the recently held Outreach Program last June 12, 2019.
A featured member shall gain corresponding 'membership points'. Membership points are internal points garnered by members and are accumulated throughout the fiscal year. By the end of the fiscal year, an outstanding member of the chapter will be selected depending on the number of points.
More featured members will be published in the site and Facebook page of PIChE Batangas Chapter as another way of showing how the chapter values the help from the members of the organization and salutes their passion in doing the activity without expecting something in return.
PIChE Batangas Chapter teamed up with Project Inspire in providing assistance through programs intended for the students, children and families living at the foot of Taal Volcano at Balete, Lipa, Batangas. It was held last June 12, 2019 in advocacy to inspire others to help. Attended by 110 participants, gift giving, chemical engineering experiments, proper waste disposal and fun activities were commenced in a whole day program.
Project Inspire composed of volunteer chemical engineers from Batangas and food engineers spearheaded the games and activities for the first part of the program. Prizes were also given to students who have participated on the said activities which catered all grade levels of Calawit Elementary School. The games included the “Trip to Jerusalem” for Daycare to Kindergarten Levels and Dancing Competition for Grade Levels I-VI.
By 11:30 AM, meals sponsored by PIChE Batangas Chapter were served. Chemical engineering experiments which would appear as ’Magical Experiments’ were also conducted by the chapter. These included the science behind atmospheric pressure (i.e. filled bottle with carton cover), layers of liquid (i.e. different colors of liquid atop each other in a glass) and image inversion (i.e. reading in front of a filled glass with inverted letters).
At the end of the program, children were given school supplies as a gift for this school year.
As for Mr. Larry, the principal of Calawit Elementary School, any kind of help they receive will be able to aid in their situation. But when asked about their necessity especially for facilities improvement, he said that the revival of the solar powered cells shall provide them ample electricity to utilize the computers and ceiling fans when in class.
In addition, the teachers of Grade VI pointed out that their experiments may require test tubes and other laboratory equipment. As of now, the school lacks the basic laboratory tools and equipment necessary to conduct the essential methods of the experiments stated in their lesson plans.
The chapter is now eyeing for the revival of the solar panel and procurement of laboratory equipment that shall help the students in learning the lessons easily and entice them to pursue engineering courses.
On June 5, 2019, a board meeting was conducted after the new set of officers took over the posi- tions. The agenda included the necessary turn-over of all duties and responsibilities, financial status, the amendment of the chapter by-laws for the benefit of the members, opening of new bank account, and creation of events, and the involvement of the members in the new Chemical Engineering Law.
During the amendment of the by-laws, one suggestion, which was agreed by everyone, included the membership points for professionals who would join the events and activities of the chapter. Merit points would be rewarded for each activity, correspondingly. By the end of the year, or during the General As- sembly, this professional will be recognized as the Most Outstanding Professional of the Chapter with a chance to be nominated by the chapter for the OChEA.
