Our mission

Secondary Physical Education (P.E.) at Newton College follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), and is formally named Physical and Health Education (PHE). The aim of this programme is to empower students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active and to develop the motivation for making healthy life choices.

The secondary department is made up of 3 staff members who teach across all years groups years 7-13.

Extra-curricular physical education activities in the secondary stage come in the form of a wide range of different Inter House competitions, a comprehensive Inter School sports timetable and a variation of lunchtime activities, all of which are offered to increase habitual participation, fitness and sports to Newton College students.

The P.E. department is keen to offer a wide range of different sporting activities and is keen to celebrate the achievements of all who participate. The department hosts a school honors board, displaying success reached by students, parents and members of staff outside of the school timetable and a website which relays information about all of the sporting activities, curriculum and non-curriculum based.

The aims of the PE department are to provide opportunities to promote and encourage:

  • Spiritual development. Helping pupils gain a sense of achievement and develop positive attitudes towards themselves.
  • Moral development. Helping pupils gain a sense of fair play based on the rules and conventions of activities, develop positive sporting behaviour, know how to conduct themselves in competitive situations, accept authority and support referees, umpires and judges.
  • Social development. Helping pupils obtain social skills in activities involving cooperation, collaboration, responsibility, personal commitment, loyalty and teamwork.
  • Physical development. Helping pupils to develop physical competence and confidence as well as an ability to perform in a wide range of activities.
  • To provide a stimulating international environment through a range of sports that cross language barriers.

These aims are evident through each key stage and provide a framework for pupils to make progress in four main areas:

  • Acquiring and developing skills in a range of physical activities.
  • Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas in competitive situations.
  • Evaluating and improving performances of themselves and others.
  • Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health as well as the benefits this provides.
