Module Overview -- Design Tasks with Students' Lives in Mind

Why this kind of activity can be helpful.

Students have hidden assets, waiting to be discovered and connected to school ...

    • Students have STEM-related life assets that are hidden from teachers.
    • People who students know and places that students go can connect to science learning tasks.

General notes: Connecting to Students' Lives (now + future)

    • Broaden what constitutes "The Work of Teaching with 3-Dimensions" to include teachers routinely learning about student interests, aspirations, and STEM-related people & places in their lives right now.
        • Map representation of The Work of Teaching with 3-Dimensions
        • Inventory representation of The Work of Teaching with 3-Dimensions
        • Science Capital tools and resources
    • Use Teacher "Reflective Surveys" and companion student surveys to focus on values, confidence, and use of the three dimensions.
    • Conceptboard or other virtual whiteboards can be helpful tools to facilitate learner interactions around 3-dimensional tasks.
    • Student Voice guidance
    • Practical Measures guidance

The Item Cluster(s) & Other Tools

Item clusters and other imperfect tasks

    • All of the climate science item clusters contain items that be analyzed and modified.
    • Item clusters written around other (non-climate) phenomena are interesting and useful for analyzing and adapting to classroom learning tasks.
    • "Seed Tasks" make good initial practice for analyzing alignment and generating ideas for modification.
    • "Modified Tasks" show several ways that the same task can be improved.

Artifacts

    • Conceptboard team workspaces show different ways that teacher teams completed a Do-Talk-Revise routine with the Rock Pocket Mouse task.
