Have we worked longer or shorter hours after the common adoption of technological improvements across countries? In the existing literature about the impact of technology shocks on total hours worked, I found that the technology shocks extrapolated by widespread technological changes are not discussed as much as the technology shocks captured by changes in Country-Level TFP (CLTFP) or labour productivity. To address this gap, I have developed a World-TFP series to represent commonly adopted technological improvements and investigate the effects of a permanent shock to World-TFP on total hours worked among 18 OECD countries from 1971 to 2016. The results show that the World-TFP shock has a positive effect on total hours worked immediately after the shock.
